Source text - English The Science of Rockets A rocket is a device that expels gas in one direction to move in the opposite direction. Rocket technology originated in China hundreds of years ago and gradually spread to other parts of the world. The first rockets were arrows, coated with a flammable powder, that were lighted and shot with bows. By about 1200, the Chinese were using gunpowder inside their rockets. The British greatly improved rocketry in the early 1800s and used rockets against American troops in the War of 1812. Modern rockets were developed in the early 1900s. A rocket moves forward when gases shooting out the back of the rocket push it in the opposite direction. A rocket demonstrates a basic law of physics. The force of the gas shooting out of the rocket is an action force. An equal force—the reaction force—pushes the rocket forward. The reaction force that propels a rocket forward is called thrust. The amount of thrust depends on the mass and speed of the gases propelled out of the rocket. The greater the thrust, the greater a rocket’s velocity. Velocity is speed in a given direction. In order to lift off the ground, a rocket must have more upward thrust than the downward force of gravity. Orbital velocity is the velocity a rocket must achieve to establish an orbit around Earth. Escape velocity is the velocity a rocket must reach to fly beyond a planet’s gravitational pull. The main advantage of a multistage rocket is that the total weight of the rocket is greatly reduced as the rocket rises. In a multistage rocket, smaller rockets, or stages, are placed one on top of the other and then fired in succession. As each stage of the rocket uses up its fuel, the empty fuel container falls away. The next stage then ignites and continues powering the rocket toward its destination. Multistage rockets were used in the 1960s to send astronauts to the moon. Today, there are used to launch satellites and space probes. One of the critical measurements of used car sales is the stock turn. Stock turn, or ‘turn’ as it is known in the industry, is the number of times per year a dealer runs through average inventory. For example, to maintain an average of 40 cars on the lot per year requires a specific investment (say $4,000 per unit, or $160,000). Suppose the average profit per vehicle is $500. A turn of 6 means that 240 cars were sold, thus the profit over the year was $120,000. A turn of 3 means that only 120 cars were sold; an annual profit of $60,000. Thus for the same investment (40 cars) a higher turn represents higher profits and return on investment. I graduated in 1979 as English Technical, Scientific and Literary translator from ISPLVJRF “Lenguas Vivas” , renowned for excellence. Since then, I’ve been translating non-stop and enjoying every moment of it.
My first translations as freelancer were technical manuals for communications equipment and I kept specializing in different engineering areas: Electronics, Mechanical, Oil and Gas, Telecommunications and IT. In 1986 I started translating for Medtronic Argentina and added Cardiology and Pacemakers to my specialties.
Interpreting had been an informal activity I was naturally good at until I took an intensive course at Rut Simcovich Interpreters School in the summer of 1997 and became a professional interpreter. Simultaneous interpreting is my favorite. However, my most memorable interpreting jobs were consecutive: interpreting Bobby Fisher and Gary Kasparov at two press conferences in Buenos Aires.
Translating and interpreting are complementary for me, as solutions arrived at while translating usually come in handy when you are in the booth.
As founding member of AATI (Asociación Argentina de Traductores e Intérpretes) I was very proud to be elected Vicepresident in 1999. I held this position for four years.
From 1994 to 2003 I co-managed CAIT, (www.cait.com.ar) where I supervised and coordinated a multilingual team of translators and interpreters. We specialized in Management, Human Resources, Marketing, Mining and Oil and Gas, among others.
As all work and no further education makes Jack a dull translator, in 2003 I completed the Licenciatura in English Language, at the UMSA (Universidad del Museo Social Argentino), which allowed me to hone my research and writing skills and update my knowledge of Applied Linguistics. I’m now back to freelance work. I feel I’ve come a long way from my first translations in my electric typewriter and paper dictionaries to the wealth of software and internet resources and experience of today. Thanks to Proz, I have regular jobs from translation agencies in England (Global Lexicon) India (Cosmic Global) and Hungary (Business Team Translations) plus RSI interpretation projects with Global Lingo, also from UK.
