Source text - Italian A partire dal 1869 (anche se, in realtà, già molto tempo prima aveva ospitato il piccolo commercio) a Campo de' Fiori viene allestito quello che è considerato il più antico mercato tutt’ora esistente della Capitale. Occupa l’intera piazza e sono presenti tantissime bancarelle che offrono per lo più generi alimentari, quali verdure, prodotti ittici, spezie ma anche vestiari e oggettistica. I prezzi sono generalmente molto popolari e indicati da cartellini scritti, come solito a Roma, a pennarello; chi vuole comprare qualche fresca bontà, dovrebbe fare acquisti quando ormai si avvicina l’ora della chiusura (ossia da mezzogiorno alle 14 circa) in quanto è consuetudine che i prezzi vengono abbassati rispetto alle prime ore di lavoro e pertanto è una buona occasione anche per risparmiare (opportuno servirsi da soli per scegliere la mercanzia più bella e sana). In questo vivace mercato è ambientato anche un famoso film “Campo de’ Fiori” girato nel 1943 dal regista del regista Mario Bonnard e interpreto da Aldo Fabrizi e Anna Magnani; il protagonista è un pescivendolo ambizioso che inizia a frequentare il bel mondo e si innamora di una ricca signora con un figlio, ma alla fine si rifugia tra le braccia di una bella e verace fruttivendola. La pellicola è in bianco e nero, ma se ci si snoda lungo le bancarelle dell’attuale mercato ci si accorgerà che, in fondo, l’atmosfera è sempre la stessa.
Translation - English In 1869 (though in reality it had long housed small businesses) Campo de' Fiori was set up with what is today considered the oldest still existing market in the capital. It occupies the entire square and there are many stalls offering mostly food, such as vegetables, fish, spices, but also clothing and gifts. Prices are generally accessible and indicated by labels written in marker (as they usually are in Rome). Whoever wants to buy fresh goods, should do so when closing time is near (from noon to about 2pm) because as a rule the prices are lowered compared to the first few hours of trade and therefore is also good opportunity to save (it is advisable to help yourself so you can choose the nicest and freshest goods). This lively market was the set of a famous movie "Campo de' Fiori" filmed in 1943 by director Mario Bonnard with actors Aldo Fabrizi and Anna Magnani. The film's protagonist is an ambitious fishmonger who began attending high society and falls in love with a rich lady with a child, but eventually takes refuge in the arms of a beautiful and sincere greengrocer. The film is in black and white, but if you wind your way along the stalls of the market you will find that, at its heart, the atmosphere is the same as always.

Source text - Italian I romani furono anche i più grandi costruttori di strade. Realizzarono queste opere meravigliose sia per permettere un rapido spostamento delle legioni sia per fini commerciali. Si calcola che in tutto l’impero avessero realizzato oltre centomila chilometri di strade lastricate e centosessantamila chilometri di strade in terra battute.
La loro grande perizia ha fatto sì che ancora oggi, a distanza di secoli, si possano ammirare queste gloriose opere di alta ingegneria. Realizzate secondo precisi dettami, erano un potente mezzo di comunicazione ed anche una palese manifestazione dell’organizzazione dell’Impero romano. Quella che veniva chiamata “regina viarum”, la via Appia Antica, testimonia ancora adesso la sua gloria e la sua fama. Il censore Appio Claudio Cieco nel 312 a.C., periodo nel quale era in pieno svolgimento la seconda guerra sannitica, ne avviò i lavori. Nel 190 a.C l’Appia Antica collegava Roma al porto di Brindisi, in Puglia. Un’opera titanica, nella quale, gli allora ingegneri, dovettero superare le difficoltà insite di un così lungo territorio. Pendenze, colline, montagne, fiumi furono solo una parte degli ostacoli per i quali dovettero trovare soluzioni tecniche. Soluzioni che si possono definire moderne permettevano quindi il transito veloce e rapido con tutte le condizioni meteorologiche. Infatti né la pioggia, né la neve fermavano i carri e le legioni che transitavano su questa strada. La via Appia Antica divenne un naturale ponte di collegamento verso l’oriente, una strada sulla quale far circolare tutte le merci che venivano fatte sbarcare nel porto di Brindisi e portate a Roma, il centro dell’impero.
Translation - English The Romans were also great road builders, whose roads were marvelous structures that allowed rapid movement of their armies and goods. It is estimated that throughout the empire they had made over 100,000 kilometers of paved roads and 160,000 kilometers of dirt roads.
Their great expertise ensured that even today, centuries later, you can admire these glorious works of high engineering. Built according to strict guidelines, they were a powerful means of communication and a clear demonstration of the organization of the Roman Empire. Known as the "Queen of Roads", the Via Appia Antica still testifies to its glory and fame. The censor Appius Claudius the Blind started work in 312 BC, as the second Samnite war was in full swing. In 190 BC, the Via Appia Antica connected Rome to the port of Brindisi in Apulia. A monumental endeavor, in which the Roman engineers had to overcome the inherent difficulties of such a vast distance. Slopes, hills, mountains, and rivers were just some of the obstacles for which they had to develop new techniques. Solutions which might be considered modern allowed rapid transit in all weather conditions. Neither rain nor snow could stop the wagons and legions that traveled along its length. The Via Appia Antica became a bridge to the east, a road on which to move all the goods unloaded from the port of Brindisi and taken to Rome, the center of the empire.
