Translation - English There’s also “yome” [bride/wife — ed.], which, like “shujin”, makes certain people uneasy. “Yome” (嫁): A woman (女) and a house (家). In other words, an expression evocative of patriarchy that implies a woman should be bound to the house. Highly-aware housewives whose husbands and mothers-in-law say things like “uchi no yome” [our household’s wife — ed.] find themselves feeling slighted.
Even I, who think “yeah, that’s true”, avoid using “yome” and instead say “okusan” [奥 is the kanji meaning “behind”, or “rear” — ed.], but that’s a word that invokes a sense of “a woman is a creature who should skulk in the back of the house”, so it’s roughly equivalent to “yome”. But I can’t very well say to a stranger, “your wife [tsuma]”, so…

When my close friends started getting married in their 20s, I remember being surprised that there were people who changed the way they referred to friends as soon as they married. For example, let’s say I have a friend called “Satou Mari” [last name is listed first in normal Japanese name order — ed.] This girl has been referred to as “Satomari” or “Satobuu” since her school days, but as soon as she married and took her husband’s name, more thna a few people started calling her “Mari-chan”. Shocked, I asked one of these friends, A-ko, “Why do you call her ‘Mari-chan’?”, to which A-ko replied, “Well after all, she’s no longer ‘Satou’, so ‘Satomari’ is odd, don’t you think?” That answer stunned me a second time. Yeah, that may not be her legal name, but she was “Satou” for some 20 years, so why, since we’d been calling her “Satomari” and “Satobuu” since I’d known her, could we suddenly about-face and call her something different just because she’d gotten married?

Left with nothing but a stream of "weird Japan" reports, it’s often the case that reporting in the West diverges widely from the reality of Japan.
