Translation - English “You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the LORD your God”
Exodus 20:7a (NRSV)
It is the Ten Commandments which define the shape of Christian life, thus of course the Church and all Christians should wholeheartedly delight in them and respect them. We choose lives and activities which are shaped by them. The passage above is the Third of these essential Ten Commandments. This commandment concerns the correct way to call upon the name of the LORD our God; that is the calling on Him in an attitude of truth.
In other words, those who believe in God should not wish ill upon their neighbors, and refrain from extraneous oaths, and abstain from calling upon the name of God for these things. Also we are not to remain silent while others do these things. This is because when we do those things, we make light use of the Name of God. We use it as if it is our own, to do with as we wish for our own convenience. If we do this, using His name so freely, calling upon Him whenever we like, then it becomes difficult to determine who is actually god, and who is actually the Master in this circumstance. God becomes relegated to our servant. This kind of horrible, meaningless thing is seen often in this world of late. To mention God, to speak with our mouths the Name which expresses God Himself, is truly a great and terrible thing.
To speak or write the Name of our God should be done with gravity and reverence, it is unthinkable to do otherwise. No matter how preciously it is treated, it cannot be too much so. We do not wish to call upon His name in ignorance. The God of Scripture who kindly sent Jesus Christ to us, this God our Lord, truly worked our very salvation. He is the Truth. His Name is holy, the Name of our Savior. He has revealed His name to us. He will reveal all of Himself to us. Thus from the beginning, there is a worthy and correct way to call upon Him. Thus it is truly said, that there is nothing which angers the Lord our God more than improper use of His name.
Let us truly cherish it, let us make it of utmost importance; for example it would be allowed for the church to call upon the Name of God and Christ to sincerely, fervently, and appropriately ask for the aid of God’s Holy Spirit. At those times, thanks to Christ, we can call upon the God of Scriptures as our own Father, and He will be merciful. This is clearly illustrated in the way of prayer taught at Church. This is because such prayer focuses on seeking after God. When we pray in this manner, we pray clearly and obediently as Children of God, trusting and hoping in Him to create our lives and paths. To call thus appropriately on the Name of God, is indeed a blessing. This is seen nowhere more clearly than how it comes during Church worship. The lives of those who believe in God have as their very foundations worship. Thus this third commandment is not just about words and deeds, but encompasses the heart of all our actions, and by respecting it we are purified and led down paths of righteousness. Our lives, when we obey God, the God who saves us, are given gravity, and meaning.
In Christ
