Source text - English The following email is by parts a guide from advice given by Vladimir Vasiliev and by parts an inspirational account of recovering from an injury gained in training. Anyone who has picked up an injury will identify with it. It is the bane of an active persons life. It can stop you from training fully and affects you psychologically as much as physically.
Helen picked up the injury (a displaced and fractured ankle) on the last day of a Systema Seminar with Vladimir Vasiliev. It was an unfortunate accident. She stepped backwards onto someone's foot and went over on the ankle. She went straight to hospital and then returned to the seminar to watch.
Vladimir spent time with her when she returned from the hospital giving her his advice on how to deal with and heal the injury. It was priceless. Helen and I wanted other people to benefit from the profound advice and her experience. The following account is her journey to recovery:
The first part is her best recollection of all the advice from Vladimir. Anyone who has been lucky enough to receive advice in this fashion from Vladimir will have had the same experience. It is like he is reading from a manual. He is able to just reel off gem after gem:
Advice from Vladimir:
"Be more aware of your surroundings when injured"
“Try to look peaceful and be peaceful“
"Inhale in a way that you smell people and your surroundings. Breathe deeply and with awareness." Vladimir said you can smell fear, excitement ect when you learn to breathe this way. I’ve also found that it’s a lot more relaxing and smooth to practice this breath.
"Don’t be lazy and say you’ll do things later, doing things now keeps you young."
"Think like a child, remember what it felt like to run as a little girl, visualise this."
"Don’t hang onto an injury. The brain remembers the pain longer than the pain exists."
"Still train and work with the injury don’t ignore it."
"Encourage people to train with you while you’re injured and ask them to understand the injury and feel it with you."
"Relax the rest of the body so the injury doesn’t transfer and affect other areas."
"Stay positive and happy, peaceful and confident.”
“What is pain? Study it to see where it is physical and psychological."
"Breathe into and through the injured area."
"Find a way to train. Encourage people to train with you. This will enhance their training too."
"Share everything with the people in your class."
“Breathe into the pain. Energise the area, mind or body."
"Don’t let frustration creep in. Enjoy the training as a spectator when you have to.”
The Recovery:
The Injury happened on a Sunday. On Monday Helen was back in training doing what she could. The following are Helen's thoughts as the injury was healing:
6th November - I went back to training the very next day with my foot in a boot. Just health and breathing classes. The first training I did was simple ground movement.
Being on the mat doing ground work has helped me to feel safe and grounded so soon after the injury.
Taking away the strain of standing has softened the body and helped to feel tension. It has provided stability and helped realign the body. I feel I have had a respite from the injury. You can do a whole work out this way and feel amazing.
It is simply the foot that is injured not the entire body. It’s incredible what you can do still. Always have a positive attitude.
The discomfort I felt 3 weeks later with cramp in the calf was off the scale. Literally crying and not knowing what to do about it. It took a little bit of time to calm it all down with breathing and just putting my mind into the cramp to relax the muscles.
30th November - Able to deep squat as soon as boot off. I am amazed.
I need to be more discrete, natural. Too many people are noticing me! I’m saying too much, what I am achieving, how I am failing. I’m 3 weeks into my injury and i need to look at how I’m training. I need to feel it more, try more and be discrete!
The pain you feel today will be the strength you feel tomorrow.
It’s true what Matt said 5 weeks into the injury, "you’ll know when it’s right to do things again as you’ll be itching to do stuff."
I would just find myself improving. Getting up and walking with out thinking and using the stairs properly.
3 further fractions found on final X-ray.
Spend each lesson really focusing on improving and being positive.
The real frustration came when i was getting the mobility back. Walking felt normal so why couldn’t I run or go to ground softly?
First week of January: Back to combat classes. I decided I'd try everything and so I did. Grappling, strikes and pushes including group work. Still cautious about crowd work when the anti was upped. Thoroughly enjoyed being back with everyone.
4th Jan - Felt pretty much better, until I tried to jog, thought I had to go and get physio or something.
15th Jan - Next class we worked on feet and legs and I can honestly say that I literally got better there and then.
3 weeks now of attending and immersing in all classes I feel stronger, softer, braver, more relaxed than I did ever.
Embracing all drills and happy to explore.

Translation - Portuguese O e-mail que segue é em parte um guia dos conselhos dados por Vladimir Vasiliev e em parte um relato inspirador sobre recuperação de uma lesão obtida em treinamento. Qualquer pessoa que já sofreu uma lesão vai se identificar. Isso é a maldição na vida de uma pessoa ativa. Pode te impedir de treinar de forma completa e te afetar tanto psicológica quanto fisicamente.
Helen sofreu a lesão (deslocamento e fratura do tornozelo) no último dia de um Seminário de Systema com Vladimir Vasiliev. Foi um lamentável acidente. Ela deu um passo pra trás sobre pé de alguém e caiu sobre o tornozelo. Ela foi direto para o hospital e em seguida retornou ao seminário para assistir.
Vladimir passou um tempo com ela quando retornou do hospital dando conselho de como lidar e curar a lesão. Isso não tem preço. Helen e eu gostaríamos que outras pessoas se beneficiassem dos conselhos profundos e de sua experiência. O relato abaixo é a sua jornada para a recuperação:
A primeira parte é a sua melhor recordação de todos os conselhos do Vladimir. Qualquer um que tenha a sorte o bastante de receber conselho dessa maneira do Vladimir terá a mesma experiência. É como se estivesse lendo de um manual. Ele é capaz de simplesmente enumerar pérola depois de pérola:
Conselho de Vladimir:
"Fique mais atento ao que te cerca quando machucado"
"Tente parecer calmo e fique calmo"
"Inspire de uma forma que você sinta o cheiro das pessoas e do ambiente. Respire profundamente e com consciência." Vladimir disse que você pode sentir o cheiro de medo, agitação etc quando você aprende a respirar dessa forma. Eu também percebi que é mais relaxante e agradável praticar essa respiração.
"Não seja preguiçosa e diga que vai fazer as coisas mais tarde, fazer agora te mantém jovem."
"Pense como uma criança, lembre qual é a sensação de correr como uma garotinha, visualize isso."
"Não se agarre à lesão. O cérebro lembra da dor por mais tempo do que a dor existe."
"Ainda treine e trabalhe com a lesão, não a menospreze."
"Encoraje as pessoas a treinarem com você enquanto está machucada e peça a elas para entenderem a lesão e senti-la com você."
"Relaxe o resto do corpo e então a lesão não se transfere e afeta outras áreas."
"Se mantenha positiva e feliz, tranquila e confiante."
"O que é dor? Estude para perceber onde ela é física e onde é psicológica.
"Respire para dentro e através da área machucada."
"Encontre uma maneira de treinar. Estimule as pessoas a treinarem com você. Isso irá enriquecer o treinamento delas também.
"Divida tudo com as pessoas na sua aula."
"Respire para dentro da dor. Energize a área, mente e corpo."
"Não deixe a frustração ir surgindo. Aproveite o treino como um espectador quando preciso for."
A Recuperação:
A lesão ocorreu em um domingo. Na segunda Helen estava de volta ao treino fazendo o que podia. O que se segue são os pensamentos da Helen conforme a lesão estava curando:
6 de novembro - Eu voltei ao treino logo no dia seguinte com uma bota no pé. Apenas aulas voltadas para saúde e respiração. O primeiro treino que fiz foram movimentos simples, de chão.
Estar no tatame fazendo trabalho de solo ajudou a me sentir segura e enraizada tão pouco tempo após a lesão.
Tirar o esforço de ficar de pé, suavizou o corpo e ajudou a perceber a tensão. Isso proporcionou estabilidade e ajudou a realinhar o corpo. Eu senti que tive uma trégua da lesão. Você pode fazer um exercício completo dessa forma e se sentir ótimo.
É simplesmente o pé que está lesionado não o corpo inteiro. É incrível o que você ainda pode fazer. Sempre tenha uma atitude positiva.
O desconforto que senti 3 semanas depois com câimbras na panturrilha foi fora do esperado. Literalmente chorando e não sabendo o que fazer quanto aquilo. Levou um certo tempo para acalmar com respiração e simplesmente coloquei minha mente na câimbra para relaxar os músculos.
30 de novembro - Capaz de agachamento profundo assim que tirei a bota. Eu estou impressionada.
Eu preciso ser mais discreta, natural. Muitas pessoas estão me notando! Eu estou falando demais, o que estou alcançando, como estou falhando. Eu estou com 3 semanas de lesão e preciso prestar atenção em como estou treinando. Eu preciso sentir mais, tentar mais e ser discreta!
A dor que você sente hoje vai ser a força que você vai sentir amanhã.
É verdade o que Matt disse com 5 semanas de lesão, "você vai saber quando for o momento de fazer as coisas de novo quando você estiver se coçando pra fazer as coisas."
Eu apenas me descobri melhorando. Levantando e andando sem pensar e usando as escadas adequadamente.
3 outras fraturas encontradas na radiografia final.
Usei cada aula realmente focada em melhorar e me manter positiva.
A verdadeira frustração veio quando eu estava ganhando de volta a mobilidade. Andar estava parecendo normal então por que eu não poderia correr ou ir para o chão suavemente?
Primeira semana de janeiro: de volta as aulas de combate. Eu decidi que deveria tentar de tudo e assim eu fiz. Luta corpo-a-corpo, socos e empurrões incluindo trabalho em grupo. Ainda cautelosa trabalhando com muita gente quando o opositor estava por cima. Adorando completamente estar de volta com todo o mundo.
4 de janeiro - me sentindo um pouco melhor, antes de tentar correr, pensei que deveria fazer fisioterapia ou alguma coisa.
15 de janeiro - aula seguinte nós trabalhamos pés e pernas e posso dizer sinceramente que eu literalmente melhorei aqui e ali.
3 semanas agora de cuidado e imersão em todas as aulas, eu me sinto mais forte, mais suave, mais corajosa, mais relaxada do que jamais senti.
