David Quammen talks about scary new emerging diseases such as Ebola, SARS, bird flu, AIDS and where they emerge from - wildlife. Most are caused by viruses. The phenomenon when such a virus passes from wild animals into people is called spillover. Two factors account for the increasing risk of spillovers that may lead to pandemics: disruption (of diverse ecosystems) and connectivity (of the global human population).

• Twelve years ago, I heard a phrase
that changed my life, really.¶
• 0:49.70I was sitting at a campfire
in Central Africa,
• 0:54.00and the phrase was this:
• 0:56.30"Thirteen dead gorillas."0:59.52I didn't realize at the time,
• 1:01.92but that phrase was launching me
on a long quest.
• 1:06.10It was a quest to understand the ecology
and evolutionary biology of scary viruses.
• 1:14.00Does virus even have an ecology? Yeah.¶
• 1:17.43Can a virus evolve? Yes.
• 1:22.67Why should we care?
• 1:25.45Because those subjects
relate to the matter
• 1:28.61of whether tens of millions
of people might die
• 1:32.43in the next new pandemic disease.
• 1:37.38This quest took me out of my comfort zone.¶
• 1:39.50My comfort zone up until then
was big critters,¶
• 1:44.90writing about critters that you can see.
• 1:47.82And then I found myself
at this particular campfire.
• 1:53.00We were in the midst of a forest
in northeastern Gabon,
• 1:56.98and these two local guys
were talking about Ebola virus.
• 2:01.51They were talking about the time
Ebola struck their village,
• 2:05.07not very many miles
from where we were sitting.
• 2:08.70It was a terrible outbreak,
• 2:10.78killed dozens of their loved ones
and friends in hideous ways.
• 2:16.42They seemed traumatized by the memories,
• 2:19.27but I was prying the story out of them.
• 2:21.81And then one of them said, "You know,
• 2:24.30besides all the death and misery
in the village, there was something else,
• 2:30.73something strange right at that time,
• 2:33.90something we saw.
• 2:36.20It was a pile of 13 dead gorillas
lying nearby in the forest."
• 2:44.6413 dead gorillas in a pile.¶
• 2:48.12I think my mouth fell open.
• 2:51.46I wrote the phrase in my notebook.
• 2:54.12I already knew a bit about Ebola,¶
• 2:56.34and one thing I knew is that it kills
gorillas and chimps as well as humans,
• 3:02.58but hearing that phrase from them
in the midst of Ebola habitat
• 3:09.54made the whole thing more immediate.
• 3:12.17It was the beginning of my quest
to understand something called "zoonosis."
• 3:18.54Zoonosis - kind of a technical term,
but it's easy to define.¶
• 3:23.68A zoonosis is an animal infection
transmissible to humans:
• 3:28.97might be a virus like Ebola or Marburg,
• 3:32.27might be a bacterium like the bug
responsible for Lyme disease.
• 3:38.00Once it gets into humans,
• 3:40.21if it takes hold and causes sickness,
we call that a zoonotic disease.
• 3:46.35Now, this is not a small subject
at the weird fringe of medicine.¶
• 3:51.60This is central.
• 3:53.3460% of the infectious diseases
known among humans are zoonotic.
• 4:00.17Bubonic plague is a zoonotic disease:
it passes from rodents into people.
• 4:06.68AIDS is a disease of zoonotic origin,
• 4:09.76caused by a virus
• 4:11.58that passed from a single chimpanzee
into a single human
• 4:16.56back around 1908,
give or take a margin of error.
• 4:23.11Hendra is a very nasty zoonotic virus
that falls out of bats into horses,
• 4:28.30killing them,
• 4:30.20and then goes from horses
into people, killing them.
• 4:34.97These zoonoses, for all their bad effects,¶
• 4:40.22they serve one valuable purpose:
• 4:43.54they remind us of the connectedness
• 4:46.77between humans and other species.
• 4:51.52And one form of that connectedness
• 4:53.64is shared disease.
• 4:55.67Animal disease, human disease -
• 4:58.39same disease.
• 5:00.42So just thinking about zoonosis
tends to reaffirm the old Darwinian truth,
• 5:07.57and it's probably
the darkest of his truths,
• 5:10.52that we humans are animals,
• 5:13.28we're part of nature,
• 5:15.10we're not separate from it
or somehow above it.
• 5:20.96There are a lot of new entries
to the grim list of zoonoses.¶
• 5:25.11Most of them are viruses.
• 5:27.29They've emerged and caused outbreaks,
• 5:29.51one after another,
• 5:30.60over the last five or six decades:
• 5:34.13Machupo, in Bolivia, 1961;
• 5:37.68Marburg, related to Ebola, 1967;
• 5:42.35Ebola itself hit
the radar screens in 1976;
• 5:46.91HIV, first recognized 1981;
• 5:51.28Hanta, in America, 1993;
• 5:57.36Hendra, in Australia, 1994;
• 6:01.15Bird flu, Hong Kong, 1997;
• 6:05.08Nipah virus, in Malaysia, 1998;
• 6:09.15West Nile, New York, 1999;
• 6:11.57and SARS, coming out
of southern China, 2003.
• 6:17.48You get the picture.¶
• 6:18.86It's been a drumbeat of new viruses
• 6:22.29emerging over recent years.
• 6:26.53If they're emerging, emerging from where?
• 6:29.77Every new zoonotic disease
starts as a mystery story:¶
• 6:33.78we can guess that the infection crosses
into humans from some other animal,
• 6:39.81but which animal?
• 6:44.50Another technical term here:¶
• 6:46.18any species in which a zoonotic bug
lives permanently,
• 6:51.32inconspicuously,
• 6:52.93without causing symptoms
• 6:54.83is known as the "reservoir host."
• 6:59.76Bats are the reservoir hosts
for Hendra virus.
• 7:03.61The reservoir host of Ebola
is still undiscovered,
• 7:08.38but we know that Marburg, Ebola's cousin,
also has its reservoir in bats.
• 7:15.76And the hantaviruses
come to us from rodents.
• 7:20.12Okay, one final bit of terminology:¶
• 7:23.88when a zoonotic bug
passes from its reservoir host
• 7:27.43into its first human victim,
• 7:32.12that event is called "spillover."
• 7:36.70Geoffrey Platt in an isolation ward.
• 7:40.16Spillover, okay.
• 7:41.18So now you've got the basics,
the crucial ideas and the key terms:¶
• 7:46.68zoonosis, reservoir host, spillover.
• 7:51.01With that much, you understand more
about the future of infectious disease
• 7:55.86than 99% of the human population.
• 8:00.58Pat yourselves on the back
and get a flu shot in November.
• 8:04.00(Laughter)
• 8:07.62Why are all these spillovers occurring?¶
• 8:09.54Why are some of them
quickly circling the world?
• 8:12.90I can answer in two words:
disruption and connectivity.
• 8:17.90More and more, we humans
are disrupting the wild diverse ecosystems¶
• 8:23.46that harbour so many
different kinds of creature.
• 8:29.23And for each species
of animal or plant in those places,
• 8:33.45there's probably at least
one unique form of virus.
• 8:37.95All of our logging and burning
and road building and settlement
• 8:43.42and killing and eating of bushmeat,
• 8:45.67all of those actions tend to shake loose
new viruses from the reservoir hosts,
• 8:50.91giving them the opportunity
to infect humans instead - disruption.
• 8:58.56And once they infect us,
• 9:00.81once they enter, replicate, adapt,
• 9:04.99and find ways to transmit
from human to human,
• 9:08.51they can travel
with the speed of an airplane,
• 9:10.70killing millions of people along the way.
• 9:15.41Seven years ago, National Geographic
asked me to do a story on this subject.¶
• 9:20.53They sent me back to Central Africa,
sent me to a number of other places.
• 9:24.67That magazine assignment
turned into a book project.
• 9:27.59The book was finally published
last autumn [2012].
• 9:31.29It's a compendium of gruesome stories
and scientific ideas,
• 9:35.60but it's also the tale of this quest,
• 9:38.75my quest to understand
the dynamics and the human realities
• 9:45.11of zoonotic diseases.
• 9:49.67From the campfire in Central Africa
until this afternoon,¶
• 9:52.92that quest has consumed
12 years, 8 months and 11 days -
• 9:58.04I haven't added up the miles.
• 10:00.53But the real effort has just begun.
• 10:03.48The real effort involves trying
to persuade you and other people
• 10:08.96of the deeper meaning of zoonotic disease.
• 10:12.95The deeper meaning is more
than just preventing human illness;¶
• 10:18.24it goes back to that
basic Darwinian truth.
• 10:23.07The deeper meaning
• 10:25.44is that people and gorillas,
chimps and monkeys and horses,
• 10:29.41rodents and bats and viruses -
• 10:32.44we are all in this together.

comprendre « la zoonose ».
• 3:18.54La zoonose - un terme technique,
mais facile à définir.¶
• 3:23.68Une zoonose est une infection animale
transmissible aux êtres humains :
• 3:28.97il peut être un virus comme
Ebola ou le virus de Marburg,

• 0:18.96in which we're polluting our world
at an alarming rate,
• 0:24.08in which the majority
of people in the West
• 0:27.99are not getting enough physical activity,
• 0:30.57and in which we're spending a lot of time,
wasting a lot of time and money and energy
• 0:36.81stuck in traffic.
• 0:39.47Thankfully, we're also living in a time
in which riding a bicycle is awesome.
• 0:45.33(Laughter)
• 0:46.36It makes you feel good.
• 0:47.54You arrive at your destination
feeling energized
• 0:49.83and connected with the world around you.
• 0:51.76It's good for your health,
it's good for the planet,
• 0:54.28and it helps to make
our cities more livable.
• 0:58.14So, how can we get more people cycling?
• 1:01.00Well, it's a combination
of infrastructure, improving safety,
• 1:05.05and changing people's
perceptions and behavior.
• 1:09.48And one of the things that I've been doing
over the years is looking at
• 1:12.83how we can apply behavior change theory
to getting more people cycling.
• 1:18.00And I have just one idea
that I'd like to share with you today.
• 1:22.32And that is, that when we're looking
to encourage people
• 1:25.25to adopt the behavior of cycling to work,
• 1:28.95we need to understand
that this overall behavior
• 1:31.77is actually made up
of lots of sub-behaviors and stages
• 1:35.55that people go through
from not cycling, to thinking about it,
• 1:39.28to trying it out, to getting a bike,
to cycling a little bit, a little bit more
• 1:43.38and cycling to work.
• 1:46.04And within each of these sub-behaviors
are a number of barriers
• 1:49.79that people need to overcome
to get to the next stage.
• 1:53.44And so, it is important
that we understand this
• 1:55.97when we're trying to encourage
people to take up cycling.
• 1:59.48Because if we say to someone
who is down here, as a non-cyclist,
• 2:03.23"Hey, you should cycle to work.
• 2:04.76It's good for you.
• 2:05.77You'll save money;
it's good for the environment,"
• 2:08.17it's kind of a big ask.
• 2:09.63And we need to keep this in mind
because our energy is much better spent
• 2:15.15focusing on the next little step
that we can get people to take.
• 2:20.28And one of the strategies
that we have found to be quite effective
• 2:23.54in getting non-cyclists to take up cycling
• 2:26.39is simply encouraging them
to have some fun
• 2:29.14and ride a bike for just 10 minutes.
• 2:32.47And what we find
when people do this is they go,
• 2:34.75"Hmm, actually, this isn't so bad.
• 2:37.60This isn't as hard or as scary
as I thought cycling was.
• 2:40.91This is actually quite easy
and quite fun."
• 2:43.44And that's a fantastic first little step
• 2:46.13that we can get people to take
on this wider journey.
• 2:50.39So taking a step back
• 2:51.61and looking at the question
of how do we get people cycling,
• 2:54.52what about the infrastructure
and improving safety?
• 2:58.10Well, thankfully, all the solutions
already exist there out in the world.
• 3:02.59If you go to any good cycling conference,
you will find the technical expertise,
• 3:06.37the case studies,
• 3:07.62the wheels already invented
• 3:09.45that we can bring into our cities,
adapt, and roll out,
• 3:13.05that will result in more people cycling.
• 3:16.88So if the solutions are already there,
• 3:18.70why aren't we seeing
their widespread application?
• 3:22.45Well, there's a number of reasons,
• 3:24.14and one of them is that many people
don't believe it's possible
• 3:30.12to get more people cycling in their city.
• 3:32.80"Oh, it's too far,
there's too much traffic,
• 3:34.84it's too dangerous,
it's too hot, it's too wet."
• 3:38.00And thankfully, we now have evidence
from around the world
• 3:42.13that the possible is indeed possible.
• 3:46.17So, looking at Spain and Seville,
they invested in cycle lanes

of trips by bicycle
• 3:53.41to 6.6 per cent of trips by bike

• 3:57.77In Portland, they increased cycling
by more than 200 per cent.
• 4:02.73In Denver, you can see they increased
the number of cycle lanes
• 4:06.58and had a corresponding increase
in the number of people riding bikes.
• 4:11.75And I could show you
evidence of this trend
• 4:13.78from around the U.S. and around the world.
• 4:17.48Now, just to be clear
about what I'm not saying.
• 4:20.36I'm not saying that you can turn
every city in the U.S. or the world
• 4:23.99into a Copenhagen or an Amsterdam,
• 4:26.37where about half of all the trips
are done by bike.
• 4:30.51That's amazing.
• 4:32.17However, our cities are laid out
quite differently.
• 4:36.47But in the U.S.,
• 4:37.50about 40 per cent of all trips
are less than three miles.
• 4:42.92And it's within these short trips
that the opportunity lies for cycling.
• 4:49.66So, what I am saying is that
if we want to get more people cycling,
• 4:53.46if we commit to it,
• 4:54.83then it is absolutely possible for us
• 4:57.23to get five per cent or more of trips
in our cities done by bike.
• 5:02.82And finally, I think it's interesting that
• 5:04.95when we look at some of the other problems
that we're facing in the world today,
• 5:08.94one of the barriers that we may by facing
• 5:11.62is that many people
don't believe in what's possible.
• 5:18.96But thankfully, I feel
that the tide is turning
• 5:21.33and more people are believing
in what's possible in their own lives,
• 5:25.45for our communities, and for our planet.
• 5:29.19And so, let's keep on believing
that we can make the possible our reality.

• 1:28.95nous avons besoin de comprendre
que ce comportement général
• 1:31.77consiste en sous-comportements
et étapes
• 1:35.36que les gens traversent, en passant
de ne pas faire du vélo à y penser,
• 1:39.28à l'essayer, à acheter un vélo, à faire
un peu de vélo, puis à en faire plus
• 1:43.38jusqu'à ce qu'on se rende
au travail à vélo.
• 1:46.04A l'intérieur de ces sous-comportements
existe un certain nombre d'obstacles
• 1:49.79que les gens doivent surmonter
pour arriver à la prochaine étape.
• 1:53.44Il est donc important qu'on le sache
• 1:55.97lorsqu'on essaie d'encourager les gens
à faire du vélo.
