Source text - English In the mid 1950s de-Stalinization allowed Polish music to open up to Europe. Composers did not have to worry about politicians' expectations, and were able to compose for specific audiences. The contemporary music festival "Warsaw Autumn" was created, and Lutosławski became closely attached to it from the very beginning. There was a great demand for novelties and composers were primarily expected to present ideas, which would revolutionise music. In this new world Lutosławski introduced the modern sounding, while at the same time evocative and emotional, Musique funèbre (1958).
The fifty-year-old composer experienced a phase of intense journey, and at that point he became one of the most well known composers of the European avant-garde. He composed for festivals and new music cycles. Few people knew that the tangos, waltzes and foxtrots, composed under a pseudonym, were the most lucrative for his family.
During the Biennial Event in Venice in 1961 he surprised the audience with the composition Jeux vénitiens, in which he introduced a new feature whereby the musicians in the group play sounds of a specific pitch, but in a free rhythm. This way, a shifting and lively tone can be achieved. Most groups would find it impossible to achieve this from a traditional notation. The idea soon became famous as controlled or limited aleatory technique and for many years it became characteristic of Lutosławski's style. This style became his distinctive feature and soon numerous composers followed suit.
In Trois poèmes d’Henri Michaux, which was composed for the Music Biennale in Zagreb (1963), the choir, independent from the simultaneously performing orchestra, was a novelty. That required the presence of two conductors; one conducted the choir, and the other conducted the orchestra. In the middle part of the composition the composer decided against the traditional singing, telling the choir to shout and speak. Second Symphony (1967) was also created on a wave of avant-garde, for the cycle "Das Neue Werk" in Hamburg. String Quartet was composed for a similar series of concerts of modern music in Stockholm.
Over the years. Lutosławski became less and less enthusiastic about experimenting. The recognition for his music was growing and prestigious orchestras like Concertgebouw orchestra in Amsterdam, orchestras in Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and music institutions such as the Royal Philharmonic Society in London as well as the Salzburg Festival, commissioned him to create works for "normal" audiences. He was appreciated for his works, which were full of energy, distinct contrasts and various sound tones, comprising of factors that regular concerts goers associate with good music.
Lutosławski stated that art should inspire the audiences to experience beauty. He spoke about things which were avoided by many of his contemporary composers: Music is the art of emotions, emotions which are very diverse. He stated that he primarily wrote such music that he himself would like to listen to. However, he also stated that he hoped that there were people similar to him, who would also appreciate his compositions. I do not wish to win over, but I wish to find - he repeated in interviews. Find those, who in their deepest layers of soul feel the same I feel. Many were probably found, as he became a member of a group of those few composers of the 20th century whose compositions were performed at concerts and recorded by the most outstanding soloists and groups such as Peter Pears, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krystian Zimerman, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Georg Solti and Georg Szell. His achievements were recognised with several prizes and awards including "music Nobles": Swedish Polar, American Grawemeyer Award and the Japanese Kyoto-Prize.
Lutosławski's favourite instrument was an orchestra, so his orchestral works are the most numerous and important in his oeuvre. Out of the four symphonies Third (1983) and Fourth (1992) won permanent places in his repertoire, and in addition to the works previously mentioned there is also Livre pour orchestre, Preludes and Fugue, Mi-parti, Novelette, Chain III, which are popular in concert programmes and recordings. The cello and piano concertos as well as Chain III and Partita for violin and orchestra are among those heard the most often. Lutosławski also composed songs for voice as well as orchestra, usually for French surrealist poetry (Paroles tissées and Les espaces du sommeil). This prevented problems caused by the Polish translation.
Lutosławski brilliantly wielded the orchestra, creating dramatic and poetic pieces from its sounds. He composed music which was often airy, fast and shimmering with delicate tones, but sometimes inspiring with overwhelming cantilena. He also owed this artistry of instrumentation to his experience as a conductor. In the thirty years, which elapsed between his debut in Zagreb in 1963, and the final concert which he conducted in autumn 1993 in Montreal, he regularly performed with the best groups in Europe and America. In 1965 Lutosławski arrived in England for the first time conducting his own music. Over the next 28 years he performed 57 concerts in this country. He performed in London 39 times, more than he did in any other city. He debuted the following pieces in London: Cello Concerto (1970), Chain I (1983) and Chantefleurs et Chantefables (1991).
Witold Lutosławski wanted to deal mainly with music and for many years he avoided politics. This changed when Solidarność was born, which he welcomed with enthusiasm. When martial law was announced in December 1981, he withdrew from public life in Poland. He then composed Third Symphony, which was interpreted as the artist's response to the situation in Poland at that time. Lutosławski's opinion on this matter was similar to the opinion he expressed several times on the question of the “Polishness" of his music. He used to say that because he was a Pole, his music represented Polish culture and the world he was living in. This certainly had an impact on the nature of his music. He believed that treating music as "sound journalism" was trivialisation of art.

Panowało wielkie zapotrzebowanie na nowości i od twórców oczekiwano przede wszystkim pomysłów rewolucjonizujących muzykę. W tej nowej sytuacji Lutosławski przedstawił nowocześnie brzmiącą, a przy tym sugestywną emocjonalnie Muzykę żałobną (1958).
Pięćdziesięcioletni twórca przeżywał fazę intensywnych poszukiwań, a znalazłszy się w czołówce europejskiej awangardy, komponował na zamówienia festiwali albo cyklów poświęconych nowej muzyce (i tylko parę osób wiedziało o tym, że dla domowego budżetu Lutosławskich cenniejsze były tanga, walce i fokstrotty, które układał pod pseudonimem).
Podczas Biennale w Wenecji w 1961 zaskoczył utworem Jeux vénitiens, w którym wprowadził nowość polegającą na tym, iż muzycy w zespole grają dźwięki o dokładnie zapisanej wysokości, ale w swobodnym rytmie. Pozwala to uzyskiwać w prosty sposób migotliwe, ruchliwe brzmienie; tradycyjny zapis byłby dla większości zespołów iewykonalny. Pomysł ów zyskał wkrótce sławę pod nazwą aleatoryzmu kontrolowanego albo ograniczonego i przez długie lata był tak charakterystyczny dla stylu Lutosławskiego, że traktowano go jak jego znak rozpoznawczy; rychło też znalazł licznych naśladowców.
W Trois poèmes d’Henri Michaux skomponowanych dla Biennale w Zagrzebiu (1963) nowością była niezależność chóru od występującej równocześnie z nim orkiestry. Wymagało to obecności dwóch dyrygentów, z których jeden kierował chórem, drugi orkiestrą. W środkowej części utworu kompozytor zrezygnował z tradycyjnego śpiewu, każąc chórowi krzyczeć i mówić. Na fali awangardy powstała też II Symfonia (1967) dla cyklu „Das Neue Werk” w Hamburgu i Kwartet smyczkowy dla podobnego cyklu koncertów nowoczesnej muzyki w Sztokholmie.
Z upływem lat słabł entuzjazm Lutosławskiego dla eksperymentów. Rosło za to uznanie dla jego muzyki i renomowane orkiestry – jak Concertgebouw w Amsterdamie, orkiestry w Chicago, San Francisco i Los Angeles oraz instytucje muzyczne – jak Royal Philharmonic Society w Londynie czy Salzburg Festival – zamawiały u niego utwory dla „normalnej” publiczności. Ceniono jego dzieła pełne energii, wyrazowych kontrastów i rozmaitych barw dźwiękowych, zawierające to, co bywalcy sal koncertowych tradycyjnie kojarzą z dobrą muzyką.
Lutosławski przypominał, że celem sztuki winno być wzbudzanie w odbiorcach doznań piękna. I odnalazło się chyba wielu, skoro wszedł do grona tych nielicznych twórców XX wieku, których wykonywali na koncertach i nagrywali na płyty najwybitniejsi soliści i zespoły: Peter Pears, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Mścisław Rostropowicz, Krystian Zimerman, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Georg Solti, Georg Szell... Świadectwem uznania dla jego osiągnięć były dziesiątki nagród i wyrożnień, wśród nich „muzyczne Noble”: szwedzki Polar, amerykański Grawemeyer-Award i japoński Kyoto-Prize.
Ulubionym instrumentem Lutosławskiego była orkiestra, toteż w jego dorobku najliczniejsze i najważniejsze są dzieła orkiestrowe. Z czterech symfonii trwałe miejsce w repertuarze zdobyły III (1983) i IV (1992), a oprócz wspomnianych wcześniej utworów także Livre pour orchestre, Preludia i fuga, Mi-parti, Novelette, Chain III powracają w programach koncertowych i na nagraniach. Spośród koncertów instrumentalnych najczęściej usłyszeć można wiolonczelowy i fortepianowy oraz Łańcuch II i Partitę na skrzypce z orkiestrą. Lutosławski komponował też pieśni na głos i orkiestrę, zwykle do francuskiej poezji surrealistycznej (Paroles tissées i Les espaces du sommeil; pozwalało to uniknąć kłopotów, jakich nastręczało tłumaczenie polskie.
Lutosławski wirtuozowsko władał orkiestrą, układając z jej dźwięków dzieła dramatyczne i poetyckie. Tworzył muzykę często zwiewną, szybką i mieniącą się delikatnymi barwami, ale czasami porywającą przejmującą kantyleną. To instrumentacyjne mistrzostwo zawdzięczał również doświadczeniu, jakie zdobył w roli dyrygenta. W ciągu trzydziestu lat, które upłynęły pomiędzy jego debiutem w Zagrzebiu w 1963 roku, a ostatnim koncertem, jaki poprowadził jesienią 1993 w Montrealu, dziesiątki razy występował z najlepszymi zespołami Europy i Ameryki. W 1965 roku Lutosławski po raz pierwszy w roli dyrygenta swojej muzyki przybył do Anglii. Przez następne 28 lat dał w tym kraju 57 koncertów, w samym tylko Londynie występując aż 39 razy; w żadnym innym mieście nie stawał na podium dyrygenckim równie często ani nie dyrygował swoimi premierami częściej niż właśnie w Londynie. Tutaj po raz pierwszy zabrzmiały aż trzy utwory: Koncert wiolonczelowy (1970), Łańcuch I (1983) oraz Chantefleurs et chantefables (1991).
Witold Lutosławski chciał zajmować się przede wszystkim muzyką, przez długie lata unikał polityki. Zmianę w jego postawie spowodowało powstanie „Solidarności”, którą powitał z entuzjazmem. Ogłoszenie stanu wojennego w grudniu 1981 sprawiło, że wycofał się z życia publicznego w Polsce, a skomponowaną w tym czasie III Symfonię interpretowano jako reakcję artysty na sytuację w Polsce. Opinia Lutosławskiego w tej sprawie była podobna do stanowiska jakie zajmował w wielokrotnie poruszanej kwestii „polskości” jego muzyki. Skoro jest Polakiem, mawiał, to jego muzyka reprezentuje polską kulturę, a świat, w którym żyje, z pewnością wywiera wpływ na charakter tworzonej przezeń muzyki. Traktowanie muzyki jak „dźwiękowej publicystyki” uważał jednak za trywializowanie sztuki.
