Forum: ProZ.com technical support
Topic: Missing email notifications (Staff: Fixed)
Poster: Andrea Capuselli
Post title: Ongoing maintenance and stabilizing notifications.

Hi, everyone!

Thanks for the reports, and thank you in advance for keeping this thread on topic.

We are aware of a number of technical issues, most of them related to the same ongoing maintenance update. This update is, as Yana mentioned, a big undertaking which is touching all areas of the site and, while it's meant to improve performance and allow for further improvements to be implemented, releasing the necessary changes has been causing (as you have noticed!) some difficulties.

The systems team believes that they have found the solution to the ongoing notification issues, and they should be normalized shortly. Unfortunately, some of the notifications that weren't sent on time might arrive delayed.

We have taken note of other issues mentioned in this thread and are looking into them. If you notice any new issues, please submit a support request »

Thank you for your patience!
Careful you are not censored. My post making fun of the stuck 'featured translator' photo, in which I said that at least the view looked nice, was censored with a lecture that I should start a new topic to stray from the subject. No humour allowed in Syracuse. There must be order (except in their IT systems). I wonder if their time is best spent censoring humorous remarks – but who am I to judge?
Teresa, this same Featured translator (initials A.O.) has been on since Friday 8 December, when I re-opened a support ticket reporting the earlier featured-translator 'hiccup' (the one that was reported as fixed). Unsurprisingly, I haven't heard back yet.

Update (sort of): Support wrote back late on 12 Dec. 2023 saying that they are 'aware that the issue with Feature [sic] Translator is active again. The development factory is working to have this solved', and that they 'also know of issues with some KudoZ email notifications and it is on the priority list of the development team', to then end the message with 'Once we have any further news we will let you know'.

I wonder what sort of 'engagement' professionals might enjoy during their fifteen-minute slot. On average, how many views might they get? Just a few, I'd say.
I don't even remember when I was last up there (well over five years, I should think), but I certainly did not get more clients while being showcased, especially if picked over a weekend.
Time to let that feature go?

[Edited at 2023-12-13 06:50 GMT]

The topic was created on 25 November.

Can support not pick up the reports here in this topic or is that too much of a challenge?

Maybe paying members would appreciate a bit more transparency on what exactly is going on, other than just 'big project'. Email notifications had generally been working in the past, so why is everything suddenly falling apart? Did Proz migrate to new software that isn't working?

Here, for me, we're all the same).
It's a shame what you're doing to us!
Not only are you harming translators' use of the website, but you are now also preventing them from being able to work with potential clients.
So, no, it's not fixed at all!

Forum: ProZ.com technical support
Topic: Missing email notifications (Staff: Fixed)
Poster: Thomas T. Frost
Post title: Notification for job posted 29 November just received

The notification problem has not been solved. Only just now did I receive a notification for , which was posted on 29 November at 11.43 a.m. GMT. The quoting and delivery deadlines were on 3 December.

Historical job notifications may of course have some intellectual interest for curators, but they are not terribly helpful for translators or even the outsourcers paying to use the site, mistakenly believing they will receive a professional service.

As I did not renew my membership in August, I can't really complain, so this is only to support what others are saying, i.e. that Proz notifications are a gigantic mess.

One cannot reasonably dispute that IT bugs take a little bit of time to fix, but generally not weeks or months unless we are talking about a monstrous bureaucracy such as Microsoft. Having spent 20 years of my career as an IT specialist, most of which with another IT giant, carrying out tasks that included programming and debugging, I find the excuses from Proz excessive. In the best cases, an urgent bug can be fixed within a few hours. Others may take some days. The more stubborn ones that require specialist debugging may even take some weeks, but doesn't Proz have IT staff who understand the company's email notification system, or is it all a mess of old programs without any documentation, leaving current staff to set out on an archaeological expedition into the bowels of historical Proz software running mystical routines nobody understands? Many people have complained about missing notifications for a very long time, so why hasn't this been fixed properly long ago?

Please let us know in case you experience them again.

Let me clarify that urgent issues like KudoZ notifications, which is indeed affecting the use of the site, is placed as a priority one, however, these kind of issues take time to be fixed as, logically, all issues which affect big areas of the site need to be investigated, tested and fixed carefully despite their level of importance. Therefore, it is not a matter of priority but a matter of the time that fixing those wide site issues involve.

Hope you understand.

Best regards,

Naiara Solano
ProZ.com Staff

Since 29 November (earlier date showing in the list of Forum threads I am following), the 'Recent translation forum posts' page, fifteen threads out of thirty-three are showing zero views despite them having received multiple replies.

Considering the time it is taking you to fix the issues we keep experiencing, I wonder what would happen in case of, say, a breach of data? How can we be sure our personal and sensitive data are safe?
To tell the truth, over the last months there have been reported bugs again and again in several threads that don't seem to have ever been solved. I for one sadly have got so used to this situation that I don't even notice it any more. Anyway, I find it unreasonable that paying members are supposed to live such a long time with all those bugs. Every time we read "staff is looking into it" and "thank you for your patience" but nothing ever changes.

Some of them involve skills that I do not list and do not have, e.g. sending in labeled photographs, submitting sound clips, and rating search engine results. Others require skills in languages such as Khmer, Wolof, or Uighur, in other words, languages that I have never seen or heard.
Luckily I don't rely on these job announcements for work, but if I were a hopeful newbie, I'd find it very distressing.
