Yes Peter, that has always been the case.
Even as machine-translators get better, there will always be the risk of misuse by people who know nothing about the language they are translating from or to (or both?!), who will not be able to tell whether the output is correct or incorrect.
Perhaps it's made worse recently by lofty, ultra-confident claims from AI-companies/Tech-Bros/Shareholders that the output is always flawless -- until it isn't, and they'll add a 6point, light-grey, bottom-left corner disclaimer "AI can make mistakes".

If we are currently living this dust-bowl of job posts on ProZ it is because so many would-be clients are taking their chances on "good enough" machine-translation -- without a clue whether it actually is good enough, until they are faced with a lawsuit for damages from false, incorrect or harmful information.

The place of a translator cannot be replaced by a guessing-machine, no matter how advanced.
If you do not know the language, but you want to communicate in that language to reach people who cannot understand your own language, you need a person of confidence who will transmit your message correctly without errors; and this person needs education and experience to be considered of sufficient skill to handle important tasks in exchange for money.

The point of using a machine-translator, as a (*ugh I hate this word*) "tool" on your belt, is to help in your work, not replace it - by providing a basic scaffolding, ensuring completeness, better spell-checking, etc.

The point of this post is that now there is one you can download that is both private and fully yours to keep and use as much or as little as you want, and that it will run on your good old Lenovo laptop from 2014.
- There is no risk of compromising your client's data, and then getting yourself in hot water.
- There will not be Captcha's you have to keep clicking for minutes for a tech-goliath to decide whether you're a bot and/or that your browser-data is of value to sell to their advertising-partners.
- And it will run on a dual-core processor with 4GB of Ram without having to close Trados, Word or GoldenDict; (possibly Teams, but that program is just cancer).

You open a tab, get an answer, end of mission.

It's not good at all for long sentences, for technical jargon, for idiomatic expressions, for metaphors, etc.
And like I said, if you're translating neither to nor from English, any output is markedly low quality.
However, it is pretty excellent as a basic multi-word dictionary - who can remember the names of every food, item of clothing, piece of furniture in all of their languages?!
With the included browser spell-checker, you also catch the stupidest but most frequent mistakes - without needing a CAT tool, with a hundred buttons of every colour of the rainbow.

It will not replace properly maintained translation-memories, nor domain-specific glossaries, and it will certainly not be able to replace the actual ability to speak/read/write a language to perform the work of delivering accurate and reliable translations ready for publishing.
But it is helpful.
And it's free.

It's interesting but the question remains how trustworthy it is, and how sure you can be it's correct translated if you don't know the source text or the target text?
That's always the problem with automated systems: they demand a high level of expertise from the user.

I am aware of the webpage translation feature.
I was pointing specifically to this about page:

There were convoluted ways to try and use it as a Google-Translate-like machine translator, e.g. by making a a Html file with your source text, dragging-dropping into Firefox and using the "translate webpage" feature (like an Intranet as you said).

Now you can forget all of that.

Open the above about page and you can simply copy-paste your source-text to get an instant machine translation.

This feature has existed for a number of years now. The translation quality is adequate for making sense of what a website says. It's a bit of an odd thing, though: the machine translator runs entirely offline but it translates web pages. I think this may be useful for intranets.

On the address bar, enter:
about:translations

You will see a form similar to Google Translate, DeepL, etc.
It runs locally on your machine, and therefore it also runs offline.
Obviously it's free, as well as open-source.

For those of us that don't use online Machine Translators due to privacy concerns, and don't have computers fast enough to run OpusCatMT or the newfangled LLMs, this is a very good option for quick, basic MT that you can copy-paste into your CAT/Word-processor and speed up your translation work process without an internet connection.

To download the language packs, open Settings, General, scroll down to Translations, download both languages you want to translate FROM and also TO.

(I think it uses English as the "Rosetta stone", so translations between language pairs not involving English are markedly lower quality). (Still this is incredibly useful even if just for type-setting, number formatting, and copy-pasting without formatting).

Hi Sid,

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing. I am in pretty much the same boat myself. I am a translator with only very limited coding experience; however, the latest AI coding tools have allowed me to realise things I have been dreaming about for years. It's absolutely insane what can be achieved with Claude Code these days. I have been working on a similar project called Supervertaler.

Several of my colleagues are also currently working on their own tools, either privately or publicly, and I always like to see how others approach things from their perspectives.

I am no fan of any form of exploitation of AI in translation.

That said, I find it absolutely inappropriate to suggest that the OP should seek to 'save a lot of time' by cribbing the ideas and code of another Proz.com member. That only stifles innovation, diminishes creativity in our profession, and impedes personal/professional development, and self-learning, of our colleague from China. And at the same time it suggests - without justification - that Supervertaler and its developer have already got everything fine-tuned to perfection.

Fair competition between peers and colleagues is one of the most healthy activities we can engage in through the Proz platform. Don't stifle it just 'to save time'.

At the moment DeepL has become almost unusable both the next generation language model as well as the the conventional model.
Way back then I could modify the output to form exactily the sentences that I wanted. This is no longer possible. I cnceled my annal subscription for now and hope it will change for the better.

Good point and my friend, who also uses DeepL for professional purposes, suggests to wait until DeepL soon will issue the "Holy Ghost" edition of its services, with perfect consistent results based on true knowledge and experience DeepL has gained by true artificial intelligence. No need to fiddle with annoying terms throughout all segments of a CAT project. All results will be the truth and nothing but the truth, no matter whether the source text has been produced by a non native speaker, a term plumber or one of the numerous patent translators with a degree in books for children.

In a CAT you won't be able to edit the translations and get terminology suggestions the way you do on DeepL web or desktop. I've sold my soul to the devil long time ago.
It's interesting that I seem to be the only person suffering from this issue.

I am guessing that for longer texts, past a certain point the system somehow switches to the next-gen model? And since switching between models triggers a retranslation, that would explain the loss of the edited translation.

Clearly, this switch and content loss should not be happening, especially without a way to confidently undo the changes.

I highly recommend you open a support ticket for this, as like you say, it is disrupting the tool's usability.

I'm using the web version of DeepL Pro (supposedly the paid version) as I find it more convenient than the desktop version, and I've been having the following annoying issues with it for the last month or so:
1- There seems to be two options in the dropdown menu under the options that says 'Classic' and 'Next Gen'. I always use Classic as it provides more phrase suggestions compared to 'Next Gen' (I don't know what is so 'next' about it as it gives less than a fifth of what Classic gives suggestion-wise and they are usually wrong ones). It works okay for a while, but all of a sudden it changes the setting from Classic to Next Gen, and it screws up the translation that you've done up to that point, and everything goes back to default. This happens especially when you've pasted a number of sentences (say 3 paragraphs containing 8 or 9 sentences) on the source pane, and usually when you're working on the 5th or 6th sentence. All of the work you've done, manual edits etc., gets lost and you get a lot less phrase, term suggestions going forward. Changing it from Next Gen to Classic won't matter from that point on, as it will forever go back to Next Gen. You'll have to close that tab and open a new one and start the process all over again.
2- There used to be undo/redo buttons that you could always use, now they appear to be available haphazardly. The undo button gets grayed out when you're translating multiple sentences. Sometimes it's miraculously available, but most of the time it isn't. It's extremely frustrating.
3- Almost 90 percent of the time you don't get any suggestions for the first word of a sentence. When you click on it, you get nothing. I don't remember this happening before.
4- It seems that when you leave the translation idle for an extended period of time (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes) and then click on a word, everything reverts to default, again all your previous work gets screwed up (and needless to say it goes from Classic to Next Gen again). And again, I don't remember this happening before.

It's almost impossible to work efficiently with it on a large project. I've installed the desktop version recently and had the same issues again (it reverted to the default translation after clicking on a word, following a 15 minute inactivity).
Is anyone having the same problems? What should I do to make it run smoothly as before? I'm kind of reluctant to clear the history or cache of my browser. But if needs must, I'll do it.

Its insipid bland fake neutral 'writing style' makes the whole of CheatGPT's output an unmistakable watermark / 'proof of origin'.
