Almost - it was a test Jul 8, 2008

A very embarrassing situation!
A new client sent me a longish test in preparation for a large potential project.
I said I'd be away on holidays for the next week, they said it's ok, I could do it as soon as I come back. I came back and... you can guess the rest. A couple of weeks later I heard from the client again, who was wondering what happened to that test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say, the potential project didn't go ahead. Or rather, it must have gone ahead without me.

I don't expect many more will want to share their stories here - quite understandably of course!

Confessional Jul 8, 2008

Of late I'm beginning to look on these surveys as my confessional - and I seem to feel compelled to confess! Little by little the surveys are working through my shortcomings (picking at scabs?!), and revealing the true nature of my professional practices. What will I have to fess up to next?

Yes, I sigh, I have indeed forgotten to get on with a translation. Egg all over my face.

Is it really possible? Jul 8, 2008

I think that if one is (really) interested in the translation, it is practicably impossible.

Best regards,
Yamila

of course Jul 8, 2008

I do it frequently, then sit up all night on a translating marathon....
In this job the customers who make a nuisance of themselves get the most attention and the nice quiet ones slip to the bottom of the pile, into oblivion.

if you are juggling 4 philosophy essays, 2 full length books, a series of short articles on art history and the occasional one page wonder. Can you see how despite perfect scheduling and scattered deadlines something might slip your mind for a day or two?

I haven't said that translations are always interesting. I said that if one is INTERESTED in the translation for any reason (topic, payment, etc.), it is difficult to forget it. Of course, there are exceptions, but if a translator is involved in his/her job really, forgetting one's duties is almost impossible. According to other people's comments, they have not completely forgotten their translation assignments. At least, it is what they have expressed and the poll results show that.

Yamila

Along with juggling several translation jobs... Jul 8, 2008

don't forget family schedules. Like getting the kid(s) where they need to be on time, with all of their gear. Running errands, shopping, all of those other things can also distract you from a job. And then there's having a sick child at home as another possible *distraction*.

Happened once, it was short, I was 1 hr late, which didn't matter so much because the client was in another time zone.
I've gotten better calendar software since.

Just a small one Jul 8, 2008

I was on the road, and I told the client I would get it out when I got home. Trouble is, I then forgot it so later they had to remind me. It was no disaster, they understood, and once they reminded me they had it in an hour or two.

I have my systems for keeping track of things so that seldom happens unless I fail to keep track of my systems!

Guess I've really been put in my place and should go and cry in the corner.....

But I see you've only been in this line of activity for a few years, so you're still very keen!

Surprisingly, it all turned out well. I finished the projects in time and I did well in the exams, too...Collapse

I couldn't agree more. I was thinking about that same idea this morning. It's really the squeaky wheels that get the grease. It's hard to forget them.

Never, but.. Jul 8, 2008

I've never forgotten but I always write down everything I need to do. I keep a notepad, I have a billion post-its, I use TO3000 to keep track of my translations, I have my phone and Thunderbird's Lighting synchronized with everything I have to do. Otherwise, I'd probably forget even to get up in the morning.
