I have e-mail on my phone so am rarely unable to check. If circumstances outside my control (no reception, power cut, etc.) mean I am unable to access my e-mail for a while, I tend to be philosophical about it. If there is nothing you can do about it, there is no point worrying!

If there's an urgent issue, I'll make sure it's dealt with before I leave the office and access to my computer.
Worrying about possible catastrophes and e-mail will only induce lots of unnecessary stress, which we get enough of just by working on a job. However, it seems that as of this writing 69.3% of pollsters have answered "Yes" -- now that's a lot of potential nervous wrecks.

If it's a busy time for me, or if I'm expecting "important" jobs coming in, then I like to be able to check my mails every couple of hours.
For example this week, I'm expecting a one-off PowerPoint job from one client and another (bi-monthly magazine articles) from a regular which will take up almost a week, so I want to catch whichever arrives first ASAP so that it doesn't overlap with the other. Otherwise, I tend to be more relaxed about things.

I have email capability on my mobile too, but I never use it because I don't have a flat mobile rate for internet AFAIK. I suppose I could use it in an emergency, but it never comes to that (touch wood).

I have a certain data allowance included in my phone tariff anyway, so effectively it doesn't cost me much. But I do like the freedom it gives me to go out and about without having to worry about missing things!

The same here. If I didn't have e-mail on my mobile I'd be really worried about my e-mails. Now I'm always well informed
(I've noticed that in some places I'm not able to access my e-mail box, especially in big shopping malls. And that's really frustrating.)

To be honest, if I know I won't be able to check my work-related e-mails for some hours (usually more than 1.2), I simply set up an automatic reply in my gmail account so that my customers know I won't reply them.
In this message I clearly state when I'll be back (usually it is possible for me to know this in advance) and if a customer has some urgent jobs/queries, he/she usually calls me or simply gives the job to another translator.

I also have email in the phone. I was a little hesitant to get it, because I like my independence, but I've found that I'm actually more independent this way. Now I can go to my vegetable garden (lost in the middle of nowhere) and happily get dirty and sweaty and still accept jobs and be available for clients. It is also a life saver if you have children.
