But that was a long time ago, when I was still a staff translator. Since I went freelance, I haven't had the time.

During the 20 years I worked in-house, I went to several conferences, seminars, lectures, training sessions and other related translation events. Like Muriel, since I start working freelance, I haven't had the time.

And although I am always busy as a freelancer, I intend to take time out for 1 or 2 conferences a year.
We just had a PowWow in Denmark and it was great, I wish even more would attend.

I attended a couple of Proz.com virtual conferences when I started but didn't find them particularly interesting or helpful.
Since I am not interested in networking or ranting on about the sad state of the translation industry I don't really see the point of attending conferences and prefer to spend my free time differently.

Managed to make it to a couple of pow-wows, but am usually too busy actually working to be going to conferences etc to just talk about it. Maybe if they paid me to go, I'd consider doing so more often

Wanted to organise one myself, but unfortunately the staff here let me down completely. Had almost everything sorted out at a fantastic location in Bavaria - costs were similar to another event I attended in Vienna (along with a lot of other translators from throughout the world), and just before I was going to sign the contracts, they dropped me saying it was too expensive.
Really annoyed about that, but learned my lesson.
I would love to attend another one soon though

I've attended one Prozian powwow and two virtual conferences.
Both types have communication value rather than practical.

I live about 3 hours away from London, and I often see translation-related events advertised there. I usually choose a couple of the most interesting-looking ones each year and combine them with any other things I needed to go to London for, such as meeting friends, shopping, or cultural events. It is good to get out of my little attic room from time to time and meet like-minded people, but to do it too often would be very expensive and time-consuming.

I used to go to Powwows not far from my new home Bonn a couple of years ago, in Köln, Bonn and Düsseldorf - and these were fun and also really worthwhile networking activities. I went to the FIT conference in Berlin last month and stayed on a week or so to turn it into my summer holiday as well. It was worth it for the contacts made and to get away for a bit, though I wouldn't feel it was worthwhile going to more than one event like that in a year.

The first one I went to was interesting, the second one less so, and subsequent ones became less and less interesting in terms of content. I think this is probably true in most professions ... it's not as if we're engaged in cancer research or astronomy, where new discoveries are being made. The value of conferences seems to be more for networking, catching up with old colleagues and classmates. Virtual conferences: well if the content is VERY good they are worth it, but as a freelancer working from home I look for every opportunity to get out. The last thing I want is another reason to stay in front of a computer screen. The content I've found useful in virtual conferences has been about negotiating and marketing, and what to include on your webpage. From August 4th - 6th I attended the 3-days XX FIT World Congress in Berlin, Germany. Although it was a little stressful it was well worth it, all the workshops and meeting colleagues from 72 nations during this event. Now I'm preparing to attend the XXI FIT Congress in Brisbane in 2017.
