French military conscription required all men to serve for almost their entire active lives. They passed from the Active Regiments through the Reserve and eventually into the Territorial units. At 18 years old, Aspirant (Officer Cadet) Leuregans was a lot younger than his reservist soldiers—and was in fact two years younger than French conscription required.
