The validity of such an approach is not without problems, however, as these two groups can consist of intrinsically different SMEs. For example, SMEs that received a guarantee might be more motivated and ambitious than others, so that the difference in the observed outcomes cannot be univocally explained by the effect of the guarantee itself. This problem is known in statistics as the selection-into-treatment bias."

On pourrait compléter "dans l'accès au traitement". Mais le biais de sélection est l'expression consacrée pour désigner un concept propre à une spécialité de l'économétrie qui est l'évaluation d'impact.
On parle ici de l'impact de la garantie sur les performances des PME. Le traitement ici donc, c'est la garantie.
Il se pourrait que les PME qui y ont eu accès avaient déjà certaines prédispositions à avoir de bons résultats. C'est ce qui amène à parler de biais de sélection. Puisque entre ceux qui ont reçu le traitement et ceux qui ne l'ont pas reçu, quand on comparera les résultats à la fin, l'on ne saurait dire que c'est uniquement parce que les premiers ont reçu le traitement qu'ils ont eu de meilleurs résultats. C'est en cela que la sélection aléatoire des bénéficiaires permet parfois de résoudre ce biais de sélection.
