Since the verb is "tenere", you could add something like "maintains a good position in bed, moves independently without limitation", if you feel it's necessary, but I don't think the emphasis here is on the patient's ability to maintain position - I think it is the lack of impediment to movement.

(I don't think a similarly ambiguous equivalent of 'decubito indifferente' exists in English medical report lingo.)

As for me, I would translate “... il paziente tiene decubito attivo indifferente.” as (with the current skills I have) “... the patient lies/is lying voluntarily in his/her full state of consciousness.” or simply “... the patient lies/is lying of his/her own free will.”
