Why Trucks Swing Wide

One of the most common trucking accident scenarios occurs during a right-hand turn. Unlike the typical passenger car, which can execute a turn without leaving its original lane, tractor-trailer drivers often need to “swing wide” to account for the extended length of their vehicles. In other words, the truck must briefly enter an adjacent lane to the left in order to provide enough room to complete the right turn without running over the curb.

Even inexperienced drivers should notice semi-trucks make wide turns. Large commercial vehicles, particularly semis that have a tractor and a trailer, cannot turn in the same small radius as a personal car. Trucks must swing wide to make a 90-degree right turn. Trucks need to start a turn from the second lane to the left, instead of the right turn lane. Or a wide turn places trucks in the additional lane of traffic, which may be for opposing traffic.

Generally these involve large commercial vehicles, mostly trucks. Due to their size (more than 10,000 pounds), these oversized vehicles can’t be turned the way a small passenger car can—from the nearest lane. Instead, the large truck’s driver needs to turn right from the second lane to the left, or vice versa for right turns. However, although it is necessary for the driver to swing wide when making this kind of turn, they also have to be careful not to swing too wide.
