That's what it is in the Shi'a religious hierarchy, however if the term appears in your text as you have it above, then I would just translate it as "Ayatollah (Al-)Sistanti", as that is how he is most commonly known in English.

thanks for the additional information. 'Shi'a religious authority' would work just as well but a person cannot be a 'reference' in English as a title

Thanks, Dr. Jabouri. I understand your words perfectly , however, I believe in this very context Sistani's supreme position should be noted. If she didn't mention his name: As-Sistani,I'd not say supreme or most revered.

:) I believe clergy doesn't necessarily mean sacerdotalism!! All religions inclduing Islam have some form of clergy (the offlicial class that set rules) not necessarily sacerdotal class(gates to God).Your view, however, is so appreciated.Thanks, word.:)
