Danish term

Erhvervsdrivende

Danish to English Bus/Financial Law: Taxation & Customs
I am translating "Erhvervsdrivende" as self-employed persons, and wanted to get some verification if that is reasonable, as "self-employed persons" would ordinarily be written as "Selvstændige erhvervsdrivende."
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

David Young (X) Jan 30, 2012:
?? I'm sorry - I don't understand - you mean you just have the word "erhvervsdrivende" floating about on its own? Hope it has a parachute :)
Charlesp (asker) Jan 30, 2012:
Good question, but... That's all the context I have.
David Young (X) Jan 30, 2012:
Context? Need a bit more context, I think. For example, is it used as a noun (singular or plural?) or as an adjective, or both?

Trader

I'm unsure whether the term, as a noun, in fact connotes a sole or self-employed trader (AmE: proprietor).

OK. But businessman excludes a busy woman, plus trader is the term used in UK VAT legislation. IATE's website also has the Eurospeak entry of economic agent.
Note from asker:
Thanks Tom! (but I am going to go with businessman, or entrepreneur, as 'trader' sounds too much like Davy Crocket.
I like "economic agent" (even if I have no idea of what that is).

businessman

Alternatively: trader, tradesman or business owner.

However, I am not convinced 'erhvervsdrivende' necessarily implies 'self-employed'. In theory, you could be running a business for someone else.

www.ordnet.dk (Den Danske Ordbog) defines 'erhvervsdrivende' as 'som driver én eller flere virksomheder'.

Yes, I agree with this, too.
agree holmgeirsson : If the person runs a business, it should be business owner

I'm not sure that is correct, unless you are sure that the person IS the owner.
agree Alain Mouchel : business owner
