This is what the medical glossary says about backbone: The main structural feature of a polymer (chain-like) molecule from which many side chains branch off. Cellulosic means "celstof bevattend", backbone can be translated as "polymeer". Polymeren worden vaak in kunststoffen toegepast, dus aangezien het hier om een soort hulpmiddel lijkt te gaan...
