An ex-general who was dishonourably discharged from the military for his involvement in a *botched* operation which left dozens of civilian casualties.
Meine Version: .....der unehrenhaft aus dem Militärdienst entlassen wurde, wegen seiner Beteiligung an einer *stümperhaften* Operation, in der es dutzende von Zivilopfern gab.
Ich würde gerne Eure Hilfe in Anspruch nehmen für diesen Begriff, vielen Dank.

Laut neuer Rechtschreibung ist beides möglich, wenn ich mich nicht irre. Welche Schreibweise der Duden empfiehlt, weiß ich allerdings nicht mehr.

Discussion
This is not a question involving a technical term with just one valid equivalent. The text could almost be described as a literal translation, so the term chosen needs to fit the style of the rest of the text - which can only be judged by the asker. The term I prefer is the one I listed first and the one I used in my translation of the sentence.
The aim of the KudoZ system is for translators to help each other out ... and I don't see how providing several valid options in this case falls short of that aim.
