Found in an article on Psychology Today:
In [John Welwood's] classic book, Toward a Psychology of Awakening, which was one of my textbooks during my doctoral program, he defined spiritual bypassing as using “spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep personal, emotional ‘unfinished business,’ to shore up a shaky sense of self, or to belittle basic needs, feelings, and developmental tasks.” The goal of such practices, he claimed, was enlightenment.

More context: Spiritual bypassing can be used in therapeutic or other psychological processes to avoid difficult emotional states (anger, sadness, etc.) and privilege more comfortable emotional states (hope, wisdom, etc.) instead as a way to feel better or to focus on the positive, thereby ignoring important aspects of one's emotional world that need attention.

Spiritual Bypassing
