French term

alvéoles

French to English Other Food & Drink chocolate packaging
This is the last one - I think!

My guess is that these are the plastic trays into which the chocolates are placed, inside the box. If so, would I call this a "multi-cavity tray"?

Thanks again.

Discussion

Yasutomo Kanazawa Jul 3, 2009:
@ Marta Thanks for you comment. Yes, tray was on the right track. As I suggested below for a suggestion, I knew what it was, except that I didn't know how to call it in English and also in my native language. I suppose there is a specific name for it in the industry, but it's one of those plastic trays with holes (cavities) where you place the chocolates, especially when the chocolates are two-layered in a box. You have two of them, maybe half a dozen or dozen in the bottom, and another half a dozen or dozen on top of the bottom one.

Glossary entry I hope my glossary entry looks ok for anyone interested. I could have given a few more variations, and covered the US version too, but I'm not sure about how long the entries should be. Let me know if you have any thoughts - and thanks again for your help on this sticky, cavity-inducing subject!
Marta Scott (asker) Jul 3, 2009:
Thanks French Foodie! Just what I needed for complete reassurance that I was on the right track. And the temperature has dropped today, so I'm not melting any more!
French Foodie Jul 2, 2009:
French picture Hi Marta,
Here is a link on a French site showing a picture of chocolate packaging with "aveoles", which corresponds to links already provided with trays, molded trays, cavities, etc.
http://www.chocolaterie-du-luxembourg.com/boutique/
Marta Scott (asker) Jul 2, 2009:
Nearing melt-down... ...but feel I'm getting somewhere by trying to keep it simple.

Some links for anyone still sticking with it! And thank you ALL for your enthusiastic debate.

Australian company which talks about "inserts" with "cavities"
http://www.metropak.com.au/pvc.htm

This one calls them "trays"
http://www.plasbox.com.au/confectionery_packaging.html

Finally: a British site with pictures! They call them "tray inserts" or "chocolate trays"
http://www.chocolatetrays.co.uk/standard.htm

A US site with picture catalogue - refers to "(candy) trays" with "cavities"
http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/candies/candytrays.htm#tra...

The more I go on the safer I feel with a nice general "tray"...

I'd feel better if I found French websites showing the same things as "alvéoles" to be sure we were on the right track in the first place! I'm going to recheck your entries in case there's something there...
Tony M Jul 2, 2009:
Unconvinced I'm sorry both of you, but I remain highly sceptical about the use of 'blister' (whether or not associated with 'tray').

I did a quick Google of the combined term "blister tray", restricting the search to pages from the UK [just as an experiment] — the only (few) pages I found that I could easily interpret were either talking about conventional blister packs as I know them (typically used for things like pills, or small items, where they are sealed into 'bumps' or blisters); or else came from the same range of mainly Far Eastern exporters.

I have not found a single reference directly from a Western manufacturer / supplier of such things as used specifically in chocolate packaging.

Let's not forget the origins of the word 'blister pack' in the first place.
texasweed Jul 2, 2009:
Proposed both? Sorry jlsjr but you did NOT "TRANLATE".I am invinting you to do so and I shall delete my answer! (too hot in France to sleep!)
Jean-Louis S. Jul 2, 2009:
Blister? Tony, even if these are now mostly manufactured in places where English is not the dominant language, it is unlikely that the name is derived from 'franglais'. I doubt that hundreds of manufacturers and sellers from China and India would have had such influence from the French speaking world. But as before, I am ready to be proven wrong by you!
As far as packaging or tray is concerned, both seem quite frequently used for chocolate; this is, in part, why I proposed both.
texasweed Jul 2, 2009:
Blister, indeed Sorry Tony but I beg to differ. You seem to confuse "blister packs" with "blister trays". That's the very reason why I cannot agree with jlsjr's "blister-packaging" while submitting "chocolate blister trays". Google it up and see for yourself.
Tony M Jul 1, 2009:
Blister? Not too sure about that one either, I'm sorry to say!

In FR, the franglais word blister is used with a rather different meaning than in en; however, even in EN, I don't think it refers to the kind of things used to hold chocolates in a box (if indeed that's what it is!) — the kind of 'blister packs' I know are quite different, and probably unsuitable for packing chocolates!
Marta Scott (asker) Jul 1, 2009:
I agree, multi-cavity is not the one It seems more likely to do with blisters of some kind
Tony M Jul 1, 2009:
multi-cavity tray? Doesn't get a convincing number of hits on Google, I can't help thinking there must be some more specialized industry term for these; but I think basic your understanding is correct.

molded inserts

This web site has all sorts of descriptions of candy and chocolate packaging that could be useful.

http://www.candylandcrafts.com/packagingindex.htm

Here they show the kind of packaging described in your French text, and refer to it as a molded insert with a given number of cavities:

A perfect way of presenting candy masterpieces. Boxes have gold molded inserts to accommodate individual chocolate or other pieces and all come with clear plastic fitted covers to protect and show off
box contents. We also have a great selection of Candy Cups (you can use your back button to return)
(shown - molded oreo cookie box - 12 cavity)

plastic trays for placing chocolates

Your guess is right. I would just call them plastic trays for placing chocolates.
Note from asker:
Thanks for your contribution Yasutomo. "Tray" was on the right track, it seems.
Peer comment(s):

disagree texasweed : Sorry Yasutomo but this is just awkward. Just picture it as a Gloss entry?! "A "thing" made for "that"? "Things" have specific names, not generalities. (Unless you get into legalese and wish to obtain deliberately ambiguous translations!)

neutral Emma Paulay : Yup, they call it a chocolate blister tray. They also say it's "gold plated". Expensive chocolates, non?//Exactly - but your link says "gold plated", twice, in rather large letters, which makes it useless as a reference as far as I'm concerned :-))
