Depending on the vehicle configuration, i.e. the engine compartment geometry or achievable exhaust temperatures, a special, newly developed protection system was used. In the event of a severe frontal impact, the system will ensure that the refrigerant/air mixture in the engine compartment is separated from hot engine parts. The latter are also effectively cooled. This is made possible using a gas generator filled with argon. By directing inert argon gas to the corresponding hot areas, possible ignition of the refrigerant can be counteracted.
