Crespi è un distillato di forme, perlopiù geometriche. Potrebbe essere scaturito dalla mente di un matematico. Crespi ha un ritmo. Se un computer scansionasse la sua mappa, se la analizzasse, forse troverebbe delle corrispondenze con note musicali, con un’armonia di fondo ben delineata. Forse, vista la perfezione del suo impianto urbano, la musica che ne scaturirebbe potrebbe avvicinarsi a una partita o a una sonata di Bach.
Crespi, a guardarlo dall’alto, con un occhio zenitale, appare ordinato e diviso in due parti distinte. La strada principale che arriva da Capriate e che conduce al cimitero, dove il villaggio termina, separa la zona destinata all’abitare, sulla sinistra, da quella del lavoro, a destra.
Lo stabilimento offre un fronte lunghissimo, la base di un triangolo isoscele immaginario che accoglie la stragrande maggioranza delle abitazioni e degli edifici riservati alla vita comunitaria – scuola, chiesa, negozi, servizi.
Le case operaie sono poste su una sorta di scacchiera, distribuite in gruppi, separate l’una dall’altra da lotti di terreno delimitati da recinzioni alte un metro.
Le strade, distribuite ortogonalmente, offrono unità al disegno urbano e sottolineano l’organizzazione razionale dello spazio.
Le abitazioni più tarde, riservate ai dirigenti, sono invece disposte in maniera più libera all’interno di un’area verde prossima al bosco, a sud-est dell’edificato.

Crespi is an amalgamation of shapes that are, for the most, geometric. It could have sprung from a mathematician’s mind. Crespi has its own rhythm. If you were to scan a map of the city into a computer to analyse it, you might find that it corresponds to musical notes, with a well-defined background harmony. Perhaps, given the perfection of its urban structure, the music from these notes would be similar to one of Bach’s suites or sonatas. Perhaps.
From a bird’s eye view, Crespi appears highly ordered, divided into two distinct parts. The main street that arrives from Capriate and leads to the cemetery, where the village ends, separates the residential area, on the left, from the manufacturing area, on the right.
The factory has an extremely long front side, which provides the base of an imaginary isosceles triangle that faces the vast majority of homes and buildings reserved for civic life – school, church, shops and services.
The workers’ homes were laid out in a chessboard design, divided into groups, each separated by plots of land bordered by fences standing one-metre high.
The streets, arranged perpendicularly, provide unity to the urban design and emphasise the rational organisation of the space.
Later homes, reserved for executives, were arranged more freely within green area near the woods, south-west of the developed area.

Nell’immaginario comune, il castello è quasi sempre abbarbicato su uno sperone di roccia, immerso tra le nebbie, che domina imponente la vallata, protetto da robuste mura. Tali immagini ci conducono subito a fantasticare e a costruire scenari di corte, tra danze e musiche e poi a trame più cruente dove a prendere il sopravvento sono battaglie e assedi lunghissimi.
Se invece prendiamo Otranto, cittadina pugliese tra le più incantevoli, la scena è diversa, eppure altrettanto suggestiva. Anche qui c’è un castello, vero, ma le mura sembrano sorgere direttamente dal mare cristallino, come se formassero con l’acqua un tutt’uno a difesa del borgo.
Il borgo storico e la cattedrale rappresentano uno dei gioielli del Salento, una lingua di terra tra le più ricche di sorprese e meraviglie d’Italia.
Al centro di Otranto si accede tramite una porta chiamata Porta Terra facente parte delle mura che, nel corso dei secoli, sono state più volte riassettate.
Il borgo è un groviglio di vicoli, stradine, svolte improvvise e strade cieche, spesso in salita, con la pavimentazione in pietra. Questo modo di definire il tessuto viario era alla base della strategia difensiva adottata dopo la caduta dell’impero romano. Essendo Otranto infatti divenuta vulnerabile agli attacchi dal mare, quando le navi nemiche non venivano avvistate in tempo, i cittadini cercavano di temporeggiare e di organizzare la resistenza, approfittando del tempo che gli assalitori perdevano nell’orientarsi tra le viuzze del centro.
Oggi che non ci si deve difendere dai pirati, passeggiare nei vicoli del borgo è puro piacere. La città si presenta nello splendore bianco delle mura su cui riverbera la luce del sole salentino. Gli edifici con porte e finestre piccole sono spesso abbelliti da fiori e si presentano sul piano stradale intervallate da numerosi negozietti di prodotti artigianali.
Splendida è anche la passeggiata sulle mura che strapiombano sul mare. Qui ci si può sedere a uno dei diversi locali, sorseggiando un drink davanti al mare che si stende a perdita d’occhio.
Il castello aragonese, costruito nel XV secolo, è stato oggetto di modifiche continue a partire dalle più antiche per arrivare a quelle imposte dalle truppe napoleoniche che lo occuparono nel 1800. La pianta è irregolare e vi campeggiano tre torrioni cilindrici e un bastione a lancia del 1578. Attorno è stato scavato un fossato. Si può accedere ai piani superiori attraverso una scalinata che parte dal centro.
Altro edificio meritevole di visita è la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata. Si trova sul punto più alto della cittadina, costruita sulle rovine di una domus romana e di un tempio paleocristiano.
La cattedrale fu iniziata nel 1080, sotto Gregorio VII, e presenta una perfetta armonia di stili: paleocristiano, bizantino e romanico. Nel 1480 Otranto venne attaccata dai Turchi e anche la cattedrale subì l’incursione uscendone in parte danneggiata.
All’esterno si nota il grande rosone a 16 raggi, decorato secondo l’arte gotico-araba, mentre al centro è stato costruito, nel XVII secolo, il portale barocco e sui lati sono state poste due monofore, finestre a una sola apertura.
Il vero tesoro si trova all’interno, il pavimento infatti ospita un magnifico mosaico la cui data di realizzazione è il 1163. L’opera occupa l’intera navata centrale, un pezzo dell’abside e due ali del transetto, ed è stato realizzato con tessere policrome di calcare. Non è semplice districarsi tra le scene che costituiscono la complessa narrazione. Al centro della storia si trova un grande albero della vita sostenuto da una coppia di elefanti, da cui si dipartono scene che mescolano elementi provenienti da più ambiti culturali: la Bibbia, i cicli cavallereschi, le raffigurazioni del lavoro nei mesi dell’anno, elementi tratti dal mondo classico, il tema dell’Apocalisse, i segni zodiacali. È probabile che alla base del racconto ci sia l’intenzione di simboleggiare il dramma dell’uomo che deve districarsi nell’eterna lotta tra il bene e il male, tra la virtù e il vizio e tra le varie pulsioni che lo caratterizzano.
Forse più che per capire ciò che ci vuole raccontare conviene approcciarsi al mosaico perché ci consegna un pezzo di mondo che parla sì un’altra lingua, ma dove impareggiabile è la qualità dell’esecuzione, la fantasia, la potenza di certe immagini.
Notevole è la cripta, una miniatura della moschea di Cordoba in Spagna. Si caratterizza per le quarantotto campate intervallate da oltre settanta tra colonne e pilastri. I materiali usati per la costruzione degli elementi di sostegno sono diversi – marmo, porfido, breccia orientale – e altrettanto diversi sono gli stili e le raffigurazioni.
A celebrare l’omonima città inoltre c’è il romanzo gotico di Walpole, Il castello di Otranto, il quale emana un’aura di mistero proprio come il complesso dell’antico borgo: un tempo, un canto di sirena per marinai dalle cattive intenzioni, oggi un richiamo per viaggiatori che vagano alla ricerca di uno dei tesori più belli d’Italia.
Dal 2010 il borgo di Otranto è patrimonio dell’Unesco.

In the collective imagination, a castle is usually clinging to a rock cliff, hidden behind clouds and looking out majestically over a valley, protected by thick walls. From this image, we construct fantasies about courtly scenes, with dancing and music, sometimes from there moving on to conspiracies, bloody battles and lengthy sieges.
In Otranto, a truly enchanting city in Puglia, the setting is a bit different, but no less interesting. There is an ancient castle in the city, but its walls seem to rise up from the limpid sea, forming, together with the water, a sort of defense for the town.
This historical town and its cathedral represent one of the jewels of Salento, a stretch of land that is full of surprises and marvels.
You arrive in Otranto’s city center through the Porta Terra gate, part of the city wall that, over the centuries, has been rebuilt several times.
The village is a maze of streets, passageways, sudden curves and blind alleys, often uphill, and paved in stone. This method of organizing the streets was part of its defensive strategy, adopted after the fall of the Roman Empire. In fact, as Otranto was vulnerable to attacks from the sea, when enemy ships were not spotted in time, so the citizens bought themselves time to organize their opposition while their enemies were lost, trying to orient themselves in the labyrinthine streets.
Today there is no longer a need to defend against pirates, and strolling through the alleyways is truly a pleasure. The city walls give it a white-tinged splendor, reflecting the rays of the Salento sun. The buildings have small doors and windows and are often adorned with flowers, and the streets are lined with houses and numerous shops selling handcrafted products.
The footpath along the city wall that hangs out over the sea is also breathtaking. You can take a break at any of the various bars or restaurants, sipping a drink while looking out over the sea that extends beyond the horizon.
The Castle, built in the 15th century, was subject to continuous modifications, from the beginning right through to the ones imposed by Napolean’s troops, who occupied the castle in 1800. It has an irregular layout, with three cylindrical towers and lance-shaped ramparts from 1578. A moat surrounds the structure. You can visit the upstairs rooms from a staircase in the center.
Another building that is worth a visit is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata. It is on the city’s highest point, built on the ruins of a domus romana and a paleo-Christian temple.
The cathedral dates back to 1080, under Pope Gregory VII, and features a stunning balance of styles: paleo-Christian, Byzantine and Romanesque. In 1480, the Turks attacked Otranto and the cathedral was partially damaged.
From the exterior, you can see the large rose window with 16 rays, decorated in the Gothic-Arab style, while the center of the façade features the Baroque portal built in the 17th century, with single lancet windows at each side.
However, the real treasure is found inside. The flooring is a magnificent mosaic completed in 1163. It takes up the entire central nave, part of the apse and two wings of the transept, and was created with multi-colored limestone tiles. It is not easy to interpret the scenes that make up the complex narrative. In the center is a large tree of life, supported by a pair of elephants, from which scenes branch out that mix elements from various sources: the Bible, chivalry fresco cycles, the depiction of work throughout the months of the year, elements from the classical world, Apocalyptic themes and the signs of the zodiac. It is likely that the mosaic attempts to symbolize the plight of humankind, who must constantly fight a battle of good against evil, choosing between virtue and vice, and the various temptations it entails.
Perhaps rather than trying to understand its narrative, the mosaic should simply be admired for its incomparable beauty and the power of its images.
The cathdral’s crypt is also noteworthy, as it is a miniature copy of one in the mosque in Cordoba, Spain. It has 48 spans, supported by more than 70 columns and pilasters. Various materials were used to construct the supports – marble, porphyry and Oriental landscape marble, as varied as their styles and the figures depicted on them.
In addition, the city was celebrated in Walpole’s Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, which is steeped in the same aura of mystery that still permeates the ancient village. Once upon a time, it was a siren song calling out to pirates; today it attracts travelers eager to experience one of Italy’s most beautiful treasures.
In 2010, the town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Testo originale - Italiano Nell’area EURO la crescita economica prosegue, ma resta fragile; nella media il PIL ha segnato un incremento dell’ 1,5% (a fronte del +0,9% dello scorso anno); l’inflazione resta di segno negativo. Il programma di acquisto di titoli dell’Eurosistema si è dimostrato efficace nel sostenere l’attività economica nel suo complesso, tuttavia, la discesa dei corsi petroliferi e l’indebolimento della domanda estera impongono di prospettare il rischio di ribasso nei livelli di crescita e dell’inflazione negli ultimi mesi dell’anno. Tra le maggiori economie, il prodotto è tornato ad aumentare in Francia (+1,1%) ed in Germania (1,5%), e ha fatto registrare un incremento davvero significativo in Spagna (+3,2%). In Italia il ciclo economico ha consentito di invertire il segno della variazione del PIL, portandolo in territorio positivo (+0,8% rispetto al -0,4% dello scorso anno), pur denunciando persistenti segnali di debolezza. La ripresa è stata peraltro superiore alle proiezioni formulate ad inizio anno dal Fondo Monetario Internazionale (le previsioni di inizio 2015 proiettavano una crescita dello 0,4%).
Ancora una volta è stata la debolezza delle economie emergenti a frenare l’espansione del ciclo economico globale; l’andamento delle economie dei paesi emergenti è stato nuovamente disomogeneo; all’evoluzione positiva della situazione economica in India (+7,3%), si contrappongono sia l’acuirsi della recessione in Brasile (-3,8%) che la forte frenata del PIL in Russia (-3,7%), fortunatamente attenuata nell’ultima parte dell’anno e con la previsione di un trend positivo, che dovrebbe iniziare con la cessazione, delle sanzioni economiche, a partire dal gennaio 2016. In Cina la politica monetaria è divenuta più espansiva e ciò ha consentito al PIL (+6,9%) di restare in linea con le previsioni di crescita annuale, anche se l’andamento deludente di inizio 2016 degli indicatori macroeconomici ha contribuito a riaccendere i timori, già emersi la scorsa estate, di un rallentamento più accentuato nei prossimi mesi.
Per quanto riguarda l’andamento dei prezzi delle materie prime, si segnala il forte calo del prezzo del petrolio, con i prezzi che alla fine della prima decade di gennaio 2016 sono scesi sotto i valori minimi dal 2008, collocandosi intorno ai 32 dollari al barile. L’andamento ha risentito della decisione dell’OPEC di abbandonare la strategia di fissare un obiettivo concordato di produzione per la prima volta dal 1992. I Paesi esportatori di Petrolio hanno, così, deciso di non frenare la caduta dei prezzi, in un contesto nel quale ulteriori eccessi dell’offerta potrebbero derivare dall’immissione sul mercato di petrolio Iraniano, dopo la revoca delle sanzioni internazionali.
Il problema del calo dei prezzi del greggio sembra da ricondurre ad un eccesso di offerta, piuttosto che ad una vera e propria scarsità di domanda.
Nel corso del 2015 anche i prezzi delle materie prime non energetiche hanno continuato a scendere.
Traduzione - Inglese In the Eurozone, economic growth continued, but was fragile. On average, GDP grew 1.5%, compared to +0.9% in the previous year, and inflation remained negative. The programme to purchase Eurozone securities was proven to be effective in supporting economic activity as a whole, however, the drop in petroleum prices and weakening in foreign demand are expected to lower growth levels and inflation in the last months of the year. In December, the ECB’s Governing Council introduced additional expansionary measures, extending the securities purchasing programme and stating that it was ready to take new action, should it become necessary. On 10 March 2016, the Chairman of the ECB, Mario Draghi, honouring this commitment, announced an additional monetary stimulus initiative, and defended the effectiveness of his actions to critics, particularly in Germany. He noted that “if we had followed the policies in recent years of those who were saying no to everything, ‘nein zu allem’, we would today be in the midst of a disastrous deflation”.
The general scenario remains complicated. The deflationary trend causes higher interest rates in real terms and a slower reduction of public and private debt. Among the leading economies, GDP once again increased in France (+1.1%) and Germany (1.5%), with particularly strong growth in Spain (+3.2%). In Italy, the economic cycle brought about the reversal of the trend in GDP, moving it into positive territory (+0.8% compared to -0.4% in the previous year), despite showing persistent signs of weakness. However, the recovery was stronger than projections formulated at the beginning of the year by the International Monetary Fund, which forecasted growth of 0.4%.
Once again, weakness in emerging economies held back the expansion of the global economy. Performance by emerging countries was again variable. The economic situation was positive in India (+7.3%), while the recession worsened in Brazil (-3.8%). Russia’s GDP posted a sharp drop (-3.7%), which eased in the latter part of the year and with forecasts for positive performance, which should begin with the expiration of economic sanctions in January 2016. In China, monetary policy became more expansive, allowing the GDP to remain in line with the forecasts for annual growth (+6.9%), although the disappointing results for macroeconomic indicators at the beginning of 2016 contributed to reignite fears, which began last summer, of a more dramatic slowdown in the upcoming months.
As regards the trends in raw material prices, there was a sharp decline in petroleum prices, with levels in the first ten days of January 2016 lower than the historic lows seen in 2008, at around 32 dollars/barrel. This trend reflected OPEC’s decision to abandon the strategy of setting an agreed production objective for the first time since 1992. Petroleum exporting countries decided not to halt the drop in prices, in a context in which excess supply could be the result of Iranian petroleum being sold on the market, after international sanctions were lifted.
The problem of the fall in crude oil prices seems to be the result of oversupply, rather than a true scarcity of demand.
Raw material prices not related to energy continued to decline in 2015.

I valori di libro delle attività, ad eccezione delle rimanenze di magazzino, delle attività finanziarie disciplinate dallo Ias 39, delle imposte differite attive, sono soggetti a valutazione alla data di riferimento dello stato patrimoniale, al fine di individuare l’esistenza di eventuali indicatori di perdita di valore (impairment). Se dalla valutazione emerge l’esistenza di tali indicatori, viene calcolato il presunto valore recuperabile dell’attività, con le modalità successivamente indicate. Si precisa che il presunto valore recuperabile dell’avviamento e delle immobilizzazioni immateriali non ancora utilizzate, è stimato con periodicità almeno annuale o più frequentemente se specifici eventi indicano la possibilità di aver subito una perdita di valore.
Un’attività materiale e immateriale subisce una riduzione di valore nel caso in cui non sia in grado di recuperare il valore contabile a cui tale attività è iscritta in bilancio attraverso l’uso o la cessione. If the assessment reveals the presence of such indicators, the estimated realisable value of the asset is calculated in the manner indicated below. Please note that the estimated realisable value of goodwill and intangible assets not yet used is estimated at least once per year, or more frequently if events indicate the possibility of a loss of value.
A tangible asset or intangible asset suffers an impairment if it is not able to recover the carrying amount at which the asset is recorded in the financial statements through the use or sale thereof. The purpose of the verification (impairment test) provided by IAS 36, is to ensure that tangible and intangible assets are not carried at a value higher than their realisable value, consisting of the net realisable value or value in use, whichever is higher.
Value in use is the current value of future cash flows expected to be derived from the asset or the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs. Expected cash flows are discounted using a pre-tax discount that reflects the current market estimate of the cost of money reported at the time and risks specific to the asset. If the carrying amount is higher that the realisable value, the assets or cash-generating unit to which they belong are written down to reflect the realisable value. These loss impairments are recognised in the profit and loss account.
If the conditions that led to the impairment cease to exist, the assets previously written down are proportionally reversed until reaching at most the value that the assets would have had in the absence of previous impairments, net of amortisation calculated on the historical cost. Reinstatements of values are recorded in the profit and loss account.
The goodwill value previously written down can never be reinstated.
