Source text - English After the sixteenth-century warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi had established control over the bulk of Japan, he asked the celebrated
Sen no Rikyu to join his court at Seikenji. Rikyu (1522–91) was the
acknowledged master of the Japanese tea ceremony. He was already
known as a great man and had received honors that even an emperor might envy. Rikyu accepted the invitation but did not show
up at Hideyoshi’s palace at the expected hour. Hideyoshi waited and
waited. What could be keeping the man?
When Rikyu finally appeared, Hideyoshi testily asked what had
made him so late. Rikyu answered that he had been drinking tea.
This unceremonious response was too much for the peeved warlord.
He grabbed a bamboo tea ladle that Rikyu had brought with him
and snapped it in half. For Rikyu that ladle had been an icon. A present from his favorite teacher, it symbolized to him the understated
eloquence of design that was known as wabi-cha. For Hideyoshi,
the ladle symbolized something else: the puniness of a subject who
needed a lesson in manners.
Translation - Persian (Farsi) بعد از آنکه سپهسالار قرن شانزدهمی، تویوتومی هیده‌یوشی، تسلط‌اش را بر بخش عمدة ژاپن تثبیت کرد از سِن نو ریکیوی پرآوازه خواست که به دربار او در شهر سیکانجی ملحق بشود. ریکیو (1522-91) استادممتاز مراسم چای ژاپنی بود و پیش از آنکه هیده‌یوشی به دربار دعوت‌اش کند او را در تمام ژاپن به‌عنوان مردی والامقام می‌شناختند و چنان افتخاراتی داشت که حتی ممکن بود یک امپراتور به او حسودی کند. ریکیو دعوت هیده‌یوشی را قبول کرد اما در ساعت مقرر در کاخ او حاضر نشد. امپراتور مدت‌ها منتظر ماند. چه چیز ممکن بود دست ریکیو را بند کرده باشد؟
وقتی بالاخره سروکله‌اش پیدا شد، هیده‌یوشی با اوقات‌تلخی از او پرسید که چه‌چیز باعث شده این‌قدر دیر کند؟ و ریکیو جواب داد که داشته چای می‌نوشیده. این جواب برای آن سپهسالارِ عصبانی زیادی گستاخانه بود پس ملاقة بامبویی را که ریکیو با خودش آورده بود قاپید و آن را از وسط شکست. آن ملاقه برای ریکیو یک سمبل بود: هدیه‌ای از طرف معلم محبوب‌اش که برای او نماد کمال بی‌تکلف دیزاینی به‌اسم وابی-چا بود. همان ملاقه برای هیده‌یوشی چیز دیگری را نمادپردازی می‌کرد: خامیِ رعیتی را که باید در ادب و نزاکت به او درسی می‌داد.
