Are we not the priviledged? Nov 22, 2008

I really think we are! We are blessed with brains that can hold this extra language or two or three, we can put it to work, we earn a decent income from this.

"Scholarships can never be too many"... OK, that's why I think we, the priviledged, should put a coin or two in the piggy bank here to create that ONE extra scholarship - and to remember an extraordinary person.

Whatever is on your doorstep... you choose to deal with that as best you can. I guess that it is when

And... Nov 22, 2008

... did YOU (Mary Margaret) contribute to Kaibigan International? Shall we say we are even?

Sorry, I have never heard about it... Nov 22, 2008

... and besides, I don't think this is a question of getting even.

How many parents dream for their children to earn / to be eligible for a scholarship?
- Donating is a psychologist and sharing is a source of satisfaction for many.

I think this question is pretty smart; there "was" a relatively high percentage who never heard of it and now they do.

I never heard of it and now I do, thank you for this poll.

I'm glad to see Williamson's and Lesley's posts. I had feared I was the only one who had such questions regarding the selection criteria (among other items) of this scholarship.

I understand that the intentions are laudable and agree that it is a good way of honoring someone's memory, but IMO scholarships should always be completely transparent and clear from the get-go about requisites, selection criteria, academic obligations, etc., neither of which is even remotely clear i

I'm glad to see Williamson's and Lesley's posts. I had feared I was the only one who had such questions regarding the selection criteria (among other items) of this scholarship.

I understand that the intentions are laudable and agree that it is a good way of honoring someone's memory, but IMO scholarships should always be completely transparent and clear from the get-go about requisites, selection criteria, academic obligations, etc., neither of which is even remotely clear in this particular scholarship's presentation.

Regardless of how "politically incorrect" it may be or of some people's opinion that we should automatically be willing to donate to a cause that bears the name of a beloved (late) participant of this community, I'd like to know at the very least the basics of the program. How can I support a "promising youth" if I don't even know what "promising youth" means in this particular case?

The age bracket is 18 to 26... that would mean that the undertaken studies would be either undergraduate or graduate, right? Or does "study" mean taking language courses? What about obligations?? Is the person expected to pass all the courses, or is their performance irrelevant??

I could go on with a dozen more questions, but I'll leave it here. I'm sure you get the point.

I'm pretty sure that many here can remember him just fine without having to chirp in, just like I'm sure that quite a few have donated who never, ever exchanged a single word with Justin.

I respect your point of view that this is worthy cause and your decision to help. It is, after all, your personal choice.

However, I strongly object to people telling others that they should support X and shoving their own personal reasons down their throat, lecturing them on how it's not giving unless it hurts or the small sacrifices they could make in order to help.

Greetings

Sorry! Nov 23, 2008

I beg your pardon - I didn't intend to "lecture" anyone. I did express my very personal feelings about this scholarship.

I also never heard of Kaibigan International.

But I don´t find it so strange that a ProZ.com scholarship should be supported by the members of the ProZ.com community. And I'm sure that once the funding is in place, all the details concerning selection criteria etc. will be settled.

our money for charity is limited Nov 24, 2008

There are certain charities that we have supported for years.
Others that we support in the memory of family members and friends.
And with the economy, we have to choose very selectively with what we can afford.

I'm sure this is a laudable charity, but we simply can't afford to support it at a time when we have to decide between charities that we have supported for years.
