Source text - Turkish Sociology ‘with a moral conscience’ would need to pass another test on top of starting from the recognition that ‘we are all individuals now’. It would have to disclose the mechanism of that peculiar individualizing process which happens to be our lot; the mechanism akin to that invented by the Pharaoh who commanded his Hebrew slaves to go on producing bricks but forbade the supply to them of the straw needed for production. It would have to redirect our attention, fully consumed at the moment with self-centred concerns, to the fact that the quality of individually administered life depends on factors which are not individually, but socially managed and that without addressing the issues of that social management not much can be done, certainly not enough, to improve on that quality. In a curious way the meaning of ‘moral sociology’ has been reversed. It used to be, in times of ‘solid modernity’, the task of defending individual freedom and dignity against the rising totalitarian tide flowing from concentrated and condensed social powers. It is now, or at least it seems to me to be, the task of reconstituting society as the common property and common responsibility of free individuals aiming at a dignified life.

Sosyoloji artık yazgımız olan, olağandışı bireyselleştirme süreci mekanızmasını açığa vurmalı. Bu mekanizma Firavunlar tarafından keşfedilen, yahudi kölelere tuğla üretmeye devam etmelerini emredip, üretim için gereken hasırı sağlamamakla eş değerde. Sosyoloji şu anda, bireysel olarak değil de sosyal olarak yönetilen unsurlara bağlı, bireysel bir şekilde idare edilen hayat standartından dolayı ; benmerkezci endişelerle tükenen ilgimizin yönünü değiştirmeli ve bu standartı geliştirmek için, bunu sosyal idare ediş şeklinin sorunlarına değinmeden; yapılabilecek çok fazla yeterli şeyin olmadığı bilinciyle yapmalı. Tuhaf bir şekilde ‘ahlak sosyolojisinin’ anlamı terse çevrildi. Eskiden, ‘katı modernite’ zamanında, ahlak sosyolojisinin görevi bireysel özgürlüğü korumak ve yoğunlaşmış sosyal güçlerden beslenen, totaliter eğilimdeki artışa karşı itibar sağlamaktı. Şimdi ise, en azından bana göre, halkı ortak mal olarak yeniden düzenlemede ve saygın bir hayatı hedefleyen özgür bireylerin ortak sorumluluklarında görev alıyor.
