Source text - Russian
Translation - English Why Are Burbots Beaten?
Once upon a time, Ai As iki—a man from the Malaya Ob—went koldan fishing.
In his little boat, he went out to the middle of the river, lowered the koldan trap into the water, straightened it out and started fishing.
After some time, as his boat was floating down the river, the man suddenly felt that koldan threads were twitching frequently. On the nail, he loosened them and, pulling the trap out of the water, saw a large burbot caught in it.
In no hurry, Ai As iki pulled the net sack with the catch closer, grabbed a small wooden mallet, stunned the fish and said to it: “Summon your four-headed, five-headed, gaunt-headed sons-in-law, your long-mouthed, narrow-mouthed sister-in-law, and your cousin-brothers and your cousin-sisters too!”
And with that, he took the burbot out of the trap, laid it on the bottom of the boat and moored to the shore.
Having chosen a suitable place on a sandy spit, the man stretched out his tackle and cleaned it from the river garbage with a rod.
Ai As iki then fished for two more days.
On the first day, he caught four huge sturgeons, and on the next day, he caught six large burbots and ten large nelmas.
That is why, even today, Khanty fishermen, catching a burbot, beat it lightly on both sides and at the same time order it to call all its closest relatives so that they come into the trap.
