Dear Colleagues,

I just received a certificate from an American client and I wonder if some of you have had to go through the same matters and could help me.

The form is a W-8BEN and I'm supposed to stated which kind of withholding tax I have to apply when issuing invoices for them.

Anyone has more information?

Dear Meritxell,

I had to fill in this form for another USA company I used to work for (non-translation related).
It basically is a form that they can send to the IRS so that it is noted that you don't have to pay tax to the US government but that you pay tax to your own government.

Yes Meritxell, I had to do it too before, it is for non U.S. resident people who do some work for someone who is a U.S. citizen or resident, and I totally agree with what Nicolette said,

You just have to fill the blanks, I know it seems a little complicated but this is their law so that they can be on safe side,

I'm a freelancer, EU resident (maybe like you in Bulgaria?).
The "instructions" for the form are long and confusing (at least for me), so I tell you what I usually do:
I fill in fields 1, 2, 3 ("Individual"), and 4 in Part I (I also fill in field 7, but it's not necessary).
Then in Part II, I tick box 9a and put "Czech Rep." in the blank.
Then I sign it at the bottom, enter the date in the required format, and ignore all the rest (including "Capacity ... See more

I deal with contracts issues in the company I work for. We usually ask people to provide their name, address and signature and ignore the other fields.Once your form is on file, the company will/should not ask you to fill out a new one for future jobs.
