sounds obvious.... Sep 10, 2004

....but you'll make the most money translating your specialist areas because you translate faster and can therefore take on more work.
if, however, you were looking to work less and earn more (sounds good)then i'm not sure i can help you. agencies tend to pay the same regardless of the subject but you would have o compare direct clients yourself. obviously if your work is truely excellent then you can charge more, regardless of the field.

Hi RafaLee,

I think you are just starting from the end. You can only get a good pay if you are experienced in a specific area. As far as I know, if you are experienced in any area at all that will be paid well. So you shouldn't choose an area for the pay... Imagine you start working on a well-paid area without having any expertise at all. Do you think that your client will come back to you after he realises he offered a good pay but didn't receive corresponding good work?

The important is to get specialized in an area. Any technical area will be well-paid if you are good at it.

I use to say that payment (a very important factor) only comes as a reward for quality, never the opposite.

Hope this helps
Best regards,
Mónica

Making money out of translating Sep 16, 2004

Your potential for making money out of translating will depend on your ability to do a good job. You can only do a good job if you can understand the originals and return convincing foreign language versions. It is also necessary to be able to ask the right sort of questions, of your self and of your clients, of course.

I go along with what previous contributors on this one have said - take on work you are able to do professionally and ask the professional rate for it.

I suggest you pick a field or industry that you like, in other words that you would enjoy doing for fun. Then learn everything you can about the field in your language pair, accept less pay at the begining to establish yourself, then raise your rates when you are experienced and knowledgeable. I suggest you balance your short term income needs with a long-term career path approach. hope that helps.

I know a petroleum engineer who complained about having to pay $A0.90 (say about 53-54 eurocents) a word for technical translation from Indonesian to English. That's pretty good money. The most I've ever been paid was 30 eurocents.

Cheers,
Richard
