IMO, we all have our own criteria when it comes to the quality of a translation. For me, the comprehension of a text given the context ranks higher in importance than a poor choice of words in rendering. So naturally the "convict-carved-stone" business would be more of a concern to me than not strictly differentiating between a circus versus an acrobatic troupe. But again I repeat, that's just me. ...... See more IMO, we all have our own criteria when it comes to the quality of a translation. Yueyin, I understand what you guys are saying. But I agree more with Phil on this: let the context be your guide. IMO, the crux of the text is the long historic background of Theatre Royal. It's not so much the workmanship and the grandeur of the theater that the writer is keen on describing, but the long, long history it had, e.g., extending all the way back to when labor was still fulfilled by those banished to the penal colony, and cockfights and prostitutes were still commonplace. IMO, with different interpretations of the verb "carve" in one's arsenal, one should be able to pick out the correct one without having to look it up online or consult a dictionary. I could be wrong, but I don't think the meaning of a mason's job of shaping and dressing stone is even prominently listed in any of the major online dictionaries anyway. I did find it in the Wiki page for "stone carving" though(see one of my posts on page 5) .

I obviously got the "prostitutes" running amok part from some extracurricular reading. But anyway, I still think with the given context of that short paragraph, a well-read translator shouldn't have any problem choosing the right meaning of "convict-carved-stone". Well, perhaps a very well-read one.
