Glossary-building KudoZ (GBK) terms, already introduced into other language pairs, are now available to the English to Croatian sub-community.
The primary purpose of GBK questions is to enable the ProZ.com community to together find the best translation of a given term into a given language, and to incorporate the term and its translation into an authoritative multi-lingual glossary which will be made available openly under the Creative Commons "Attribution" license ("CC-by").

The primary purpose of GBK questions is to enable the ProZ.com community to together find the best translation of a given term into a given language, and to incorporate the term and its translation into an authoritative multi-lingual glossary which will be made available openly under the Creative Commons "Attribution" license ("CC-by").
A secondary purpose of the new format is to provide opportunities for KudoZ participation (along with the associated benefits of networking, learning and professional differentiation), in pairs and fields in which few questions are currently asked.
Glossary-building questions have several unique structural characteristics, including:
- inclusion of definitions and example sentences
- possible restrictions on who may answer
- a fixed period of time available for answering
- selection of best answer by peers
Glossary-building questions will be run in parallel to the traditional "help" type questions, which will not change in format.
When it comes to building a glossary, the new "Glossary-building" type of question are expected to have the following advantages over the "help-based" type:
- Time pressure is reduced.
- Translations are submitted and evaluated by native translators who are specialized in the particular combination.
- Context is more complete, both in source and target languages, making for a more useful reference.
During the first 72 hours (submission phase) of a GBK question, participation is restricted to users native in the source or target language, having the language pair among their working pairs and at least one of the fields of expertise (principal or additional) among their specialty pairs.
If the question remains open after the first 72 hours, it moves into the selection phase, where participation is enabled for users with the field of expertise among their specialty or working ones.

Thank you for extending the valuable GBK initiative to the Croatian community.
However, in view of the fact that our community does not consist of a great number of active members, problems are already noticeable in two questions posted today, i.e.:

However, in view of the fact that our community does not consist of a great number of active members, problems are already noticeable in two questions posted today, i.e.:

because of the "specialty level of expertise" criterion, which makes it impossible for translators who are actually working in these fields to either agree or disagree with the translations provided, not to mention the possibility to actually suggest a translation themselves.
My suggestion would be to consider the possibility of lifting the "specialty level of expertise" limitation so that all ProZ members having reported a specialty level of expertise or work in the subject field could have the possibility to propose a translation AND to agree or disagree with the translations proposed by other ProZiens. This would indeed contribute to the success of the GBK initiative in terms of accuracy and reliability.
As an illustration, neither of the two ProZiens who agreed with the question on patency have reported to work or specialize in "Medical: Instruments" (I have "Medical: Instruments" reported as a work field, but I cannot either agree or disagree), and I do not have the possibility to agree or disagree on the translation of "flash mob" either although I also work in "Internet - eCommerce". ▲ Collapse

Why 'sub-community'?
The sub-set of the whole Prozian community that works on the English to Croatian languages pair.

Thanks Kristina, I apologize for the late answer.
Participation in GBK terms is limited to users with "specialty" fields of expertise during the first 72 hours, but users with "working" fields of expertise (be it the main field in the term or any of the eventual associated fields) are included if the question remains open after 72 hours.

I must confess that I am somewhat disappointed with the GBK results so far in the English to Croatian language pair.
As a matter of fact, the number of translators who meet the "specialty" or "working" level of experience criteria seems to be rather low, which results in many GBK questions remaining open for a very long time without any translation being validated, if provided at all. As an illustration, I could mention the GBK question on "blast furnace", where no translation has b... As a matter of fact, the number of translators who meet the "specialty" or "working" level of experience criteria seems to be rather low, which results in many GBK questions remaining open for a very long time without any translation being validated, if provided at all. As an illustration, I could mention the GBK question on "blast furnace", where no translation has been posted although many translators do know the accurate Croatian translation and might easily find reliable source links.
On the other hand, I noticed that a majority of the users/members who provide GBK term translations are not the users/members who usually participate in KudoZ. I am always delighted to see new faces on ProZ, but I would have expected more participants among the active KudoZ answerers.
And finally, which is perhaps the most 'disturbing', I noticed that the users/members who do participate in GBK term translations do not seem to be familiar with GBK rules and to make a clear difference between GBK (which should be a more authoritative glossary with definitions and reliable references) and KudoZ (where the answerer's translation happens sometimes to be validated by an asker although it does not contain any references or links, but only an explanation).
I agree that GBK term translations might require more research in order to find valuable and reliable sources to be provided as a definition or example sentences, and rightfully so. But what strikes me, is that I see too many definitions, which are in fact just a translation of a definition found on a site in a foreign language, rather than a definition taken from a Croatian site or a Croatian dictionary or the like, or links that, when clicked on, do not show the text that they quoted. And the same also applies to the example sentences.
I can only hope that this situation will change in the near future and that all users and members will become more familiar with the rules applying to GBK terms and provide their contribution by participating more actively and by posting reliable references and links, as required under GBK rules.

Bringing to GBK specialists that are not regular KudoZ players is one of the objectives of this project.
I agree that there are many questions not graded in the English to Croatian pair (and in other pairs as well) but I see this as an opportunity.
