German term

Kommunikantenanstalt

German to English Social Sciences History religious instutions
Source is a letter from 1870 written by the Mother Superior of a Catholic order. I have learned that a Kommunikantenanstalt has something to do with the education of children and was often associated with an orphanage, but do not know how to translate the term. Is it, perhaps, a boarding school?

sacramental preparation institute/establishment/school

This is a school/facility that prepares children for their First Communion.

Kommunion vorbereitet."

Peer comment(s):

agree Horst Huber (X) : I was a "Kommunkant" once. I find "First Communicant Class" --- so something like "Communicant School" might be clear enough?

agree Usch Pilz : Schools run by convents used to stress religious education while at the same time often offering the usual, more general curriculum. This sounds like that kind of convent school.
