English term

range to empty

English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Gauges
The context: Please show them the switch for toggling through the trip odometer and range to empty.

Should be read: [trip odometer and range] [to empty] or else? Yet, isn't odometer for gauging range?

But, however it should be read, I have absolutely no idea what to empty> means. A kind of resetting the gauge?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks Charles! Pretty eye-opening explanation, really!
Charles Davis Jul 24, 2013:
@ Erich I think "range" goes with "to empty" and that it means "fuel range to empty", with the meaning Cilian has given. So it's "trip odometer" and "range to empty". An odometer tells you how far the vehicle has travelled. A trip odometer tells you how far it has travelled on this trip (since the odometer was last reset to zero). If information on fuel is included, it can give you a number of pieces of information in addition to miles or kilometres travelled this trip, such as average fuel consumption this trip, and so on. You can toggle through these. One of them is "(fuel) range to empty".

how far you can drive until you run out of fuel

i.e. until the tank is "empty"

agree Charles Davis : That's what "range to empty" must mean.

agree Tony M : Yes, of course, I used to have this function on my Audi: how much fuel is left in your tank, expressed in terms of a range in miles or kilometres.

agree jccantrell : How I understand this immediately in the USA. "Miles to go before I sleep..."
