French term

avant foyer

French to English Other Energy / Power Generation industrial boiler
avant foyer GAS75QDTH-G

this is an item on a list of equipment being sold from a bankrupt company (There are also biomass and woodchip boilers for sale etc)

I found a definition (Reverso/Wiktionary)as

avant-foyer
nm (technologie) section du sol situé devant le foyer

I tried to find some helpful images but they are not really helping me decide on the correct translation.

https://www.google.ie/search?q=avant-foyer chaudiere&rlz=1C1...

so, is this some form of pre-combustion chamber or holding tank or something?

Discussion

No one out there know what this is called?

this piece of equipment costs over €980,000 so it's obviously fairly massive.
Sorry, have no photo and it is just an item on a list with industrial woodchip/biomass boilers and other machinery and accessories.

pre-burner [also pre-combustion chamber]

Note pre-burner is less technical than pre-combustion chamber. Also, even larger, would be a pre-furnace burner, easily a million euros.

Many wood-gas turbines and generators require the final fuel to processed into a different form before final conversion in the main furnace. This would be performed in a separate chamber usually in front of the main chamber, hence pre-, and avant-, burner and foyer being equivalent (hearth, a place where something is burnt). Suitable for domestic to commercial enterprises, so size no problem.

See for example and descriptions of wood-burning generators:

If it still doesn't work, cut and paste into browser address bar, cut everything after the last ".pdf" extension. It should load.

I have checked both links by separately cutting and pasting into the browser location bar, and both now download the relevant pdfs.

My apologies.

The .us link is as above, with the editing comment below.

For some reason, Kudoz/ProZ is rewriting my URL entries.
Note from asker:
Thanks, I asked the agency who will ask client but they think it's pre-furnace chamber so these are on the money!

Note from asker:
Thanks Donal. No iron or slag involved here. Wood, chips and biomass are the fuels it seems.

agree chris collister : Sometimes referred to as an ash box or ash pan, I believe - even for large industrial equipment

burner

On the page indicated below, I found the following:
"- système d'extraction et de transfert vers la chaudière, générateur de chaleur composé d'un brûleur (ou avant-foyer) et d'une chaudière, automate de conduite et de surveillance, système d'épuration des rejets gazeux et d'évacuation des cendres."
I've never heard this name "avant-foyer" in France, though. It may be local.
Note from asker:
thank you. Yes, I think it's some kind of pre-burner but not sure but this ref would tend to back that up

avant-foyer (not translated)

I found several references/sites in English where the term is not translated:

https://www.google.com.br/search?q="the avant-foyer" of the ...
Note from asker:
Thanks, but already knew that meaning of term. That is a totally different context and could possibly be called the front lobby/foyer or ante-foyer/ante-lobby (in English) of the Opera House. Here it's part of a boiler.
