German term

jemandem Freudigkeit zur Nachfolge des Herrn geben

German to English Social Sciences Religion
This passage comes from the 1889 church records of a German Baptist church in Iowa (USA):

I've found "Freudigkeit" translated as joyousness, joyfulness, and even enthusiasm. Does the given phrase mean something like "to give someone the joyfulness of following the Lord"? Or is there a more precise meaning here?

joyously enter discipleship of the Lord

...they avowed they have accepted the Lord, are guided by the Lord and joyously enter discipleship of the Lord.

The grammar is a bit rocky, but this is what I believe is meant

grant them that they may serve the Lord with boldness

This is what it seem to mean based on Acts 4:31: “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”

instill in them the desire to follow him (the Lord)

I think use of "instill" and "desire" would be fitting in this context.
