Following the plant physiology class, I embarked on my first official plant biology experiments. I explored a phenomenon by which the emerging leaves of some trees, including some species of oak, are transiently bright red in spring. After the first few weeks of growth, the anthocyanin pigments responsible for the red coloring ***are turned over*** and leaves appear their characteristic green color due to the accumulation of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for driving photosynthesis. I conducted experiments in ecophysiology—the study of the interplay between the environment and a plant’s physiology— to understand the purpose of this accumulation of red pigments. These investigations, which pointed to a role for the pigments as a sunscreen against ultraviolet light until the leaves mature, led to a decades-long, ongoing fascination with plants’ responses to environmental light cues.
