“Great,” I said. “What stories did you find that you could choose instead?”
“Uh. Well. I know I’m good at my job. Let’s see. I know that I am smart and a good leader?”

And that was pretty much the response from every single person. A few half-hearted sentences that sounded like they were pulled from a generic greeting card you buy at the drugstore checkout line.

I’ll admit, I was a slight shade of concerned by this. But then I had an epiphany. What the participants were struggling with was exactly what businesses struggle with when they try to find their stories. Instead of finding actual moments and including the things that make stories sticky—the components we discussed in chapter 5 like emotions and details and characters—they shared generalizations, bullet points, and ***high-level empty talk or logic***.
