Chinese term

软禁

Chinese to English Other Human Resources
部门领导撤了我的工作并对我进行软禁. 在软禁的那段工作时间里我每天上班在那儿坐思.

The only term I can think of for "软禁" is "house arrest/confinement". However, it does not make sense in this context. How can you go to work when you are under house arrest?

How should I translate 软禁 in this case?

Discussion

Denyce Seow (asker) Mar 27, 2007:
@Shang: Thanks for the comment. I trust that your explanation is correct. In fact, this is exactly what happened to that person. She was suspended from her work and sent to brainwash classes. I think the client used "confinement" because she was told to sit at the elevator area every day when she was at work.
Shang Mar 27, 2007:
“软禁”指的是政府或警方对危及公共秩序的人实施的行动限制措施,通常不许出门。其它任何机构无权软禁任何员工。所以,这个词在这里使用不当。如果一个高级员工严重违反机构的规章制度,可能会暂停他/她的一切职责,令其反省错误(不是犯罪)。
Wilman Mar 24, 2007:
A more colloquial U.S. phrase is 'I'm in his dog house/he put me in the dog house'.

猜想

也许作者的原意被关禁闭(be placed in confinement)? 因为没有多少领导可以软禁他人,除非是强权的国家领导。

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "My client chose "confinement". I think it should work. Confinement: The state of being held within a space from which the person is not able to exit without the permission of another and within which his or her movements may be restricted."

FYI

How about "grounded" or "under invisible supervision"? The person may be grounded or under invisible supervision in his/her own office.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jian Zhang : As a father of two kids, think grounded is a perfect word here.

restricted

The person's movements were limited to certain allowed activities. In this case, the person was probably allowed to go to work but banned from doing his job.
