GROUTED STONE ON FILTER CLOTH

The same considerations with regard to temperature limits for open stone asphalt on filter cloth are also valid for grouted stone. However, as the mixtures used for grouted (asphalt mastic with or without a coarse mineral aggregate) will have cooled down considerably before reaching the filter cloth, a higher initial temperature of the asphalt mixture can be allowed. The application of an intermediate layer of gravel and/or reed, as protective layer during the placing of the stone, will almost completely cancel the temperature load. The allowable temperature is then completely determined by the workability (i.e. the ability to grout) of the asphalt (Section 8.3.27). The heat balance will depend on whether all the pores between the stones of the revetment are completely filled over the full height of the layer or whether only the pores of the top third part of the layer are filled with asphalt (partial grouting). In the latter case the asphalt should preferably not reach the filter cloth.
