Another method, most frequently used, is a Gage Pin that is locking up between the thread flanks to establish the location of the basic thread width.
The Gage Pin is threaded into the groove of the thread until it is securely seated between the two flanks and the root of the thread. Twisting the Gage Pin as it mates up will help position it correctly.
Measure the distance from the face of the part to the OD of the Gage Pin.
