English term

Clinical psychologist

English to Urdu Social Sciences Psychology
I have used the term,

ماہر نفسیات
To my knowledge and research, in urdu, this term would be used for a psychiatrist as well as a psychologist. Also, I'm not aware of a dinstinction in Urdu for a "clinical psychologist", v.s. say a "research psychologist."

Does anyone know if the term "clinical psychologist" can be translated better?

Thank you.

Discussion

Qudsia Lone (asker) Oct 21, 2007:
Thank you all! I don't think any of the translations were wrong, but I liked the simplicity of the word "معالج" which combines "clinical" and "expert" in an easily understandable term.

I also agree with Mr. Muhammad Irshad that to convey the exact meaning a translitteration would be the best way. I have used transliteration along with my translation of this term in a prior document of this project. I will use it consistently in the other documents, along with the translation "معالجِ نفسیات".

Again, thank you all for your time and effort.

کلینیکل سائیکالوجسٹ

Most of the above translations are correct but none is being used practically in the society rather its transliteration is much common amongst the concerned circles. If the word is psychologist alone then its translation is much common but clinical psychologist is comparatively new term, so its translation is not that common yet.
