I'm translating a Birth Certificate issued in the UK, in the top right corner there is an abbreviation BAP and a six digit number.
Can someone tell me what BAP stands for?

A reference number

I got out all my family's (UK) birth certificates and had a look. They all have what I take to be a unique reference number of the format LL NNNNNN where L is a letter and N a number. The letters are in a more solid print and I take them to be the (meaningless) reference code of the book of certificates from which the particular certificate is taken, while the numbers are in lighter print and are, I assume, unique to that certificate.

All the certificates I've looked at only have two letters in this code, but possibly since then codes have been extended to 3 letters?

Bap is frequently used as an abbreviation for 'baptised'. This may be a possibility here, followed by the date. ie Bap 120889 - baptised on the 12th August 1989.

neutral Sheila Wilson : Certainly Bap can be an abbreviation of baptised but I don't think it would be possible on a birth certificate. These are issued within a couple of days of the birth and anyway the baptism has nothing to do with the authorities

I was considering the fact that this may have been added to the birth certificate at a later date, maybe even by hand

I found all sorts of meanings for BAP, but for birth certificates, it seems it can stand for "baptism" which takes place sometime after birth. I'm not 100% sure, but my answer is based on what I found below:

All Chester BAP Records Now Searched .Marriage Cert States "Both Of This Parish", But HE Has Proved To Be From Staffs! Maybe she Likewise was not "O.T.P". Last Chance Saloon, Find her on 1841 Census!
GI Produced a J.B.,BAP. 08.07.1787, At Churh Eaton, Staffs, (On the Shropshire Union Canal) Which Is 25m from Cheadle. Also a Marriage for her Parents, Edward & Mary @ Church Eaton. All Docs filed in C71

Another Possibility is that she came from Halkyn or Northop, where there are many "Bagshaws" (I have a record of a Jane B. BAP Jul 10, 1789. A three year Discerepancy based on her stated age on her Death.

A further BAP found at Halkyn "10.07.1784 Jane Bagshaw John & Ann, Halkyn" a two year discrepancy. (No nearer matches found at Halkyn).

Hi Sheila. It seemed to be a good possibility to me, especially with the 6 figure number after it. Whatever the case, I'm sure it must have a meaning.

Where it is not possible to keep a copy of the original birth certificate or other evidence seen, please make sure you record the appropriate reference number on the original document in the space provided on the Parent/Carer Authorisation Form. The number to record from a birth certificate has two or three letters followed by six numbers and is already pre printed on the certificate.
