Besides vs. besides of

Which of the above will be correct in the following sentence ? -

===

Besides/ Besides of the digits, the mathematical symbols have been added to the “123” layout.

===
PS My first idea was to write - "IN ADDITION TO the digits, the mathematical symbols have been added to the “123” layout." - but this sounds superfluous ...

besides

Although the turn of phrase is not exactly elegant, "besides of" would be just completely wrong!

You woudl probably do better to turn the whole phrase around, something like this:

The “123” layout now includes mathematical symbols, in addition to digits

Watch out for those definite articles, they may or may not be required (a common problem coming from RU, I understand!)

AMA's suggestion of "as well as..." would probably be the best solution if you wish to retain your original word order.

Thanks, Anastasia!
agree Richard Benham : The problem with the asker's formulation is that it implies that BOTH digits and mathematical symbols have been ADDED, but surely the digits were already there?!/I like "As well as ..., ... now includes"!

Thanks, RB! Yes indeed, which is why I feel it would be better to re-phrase it entirely

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Many thanks to everyone ! My final version is based on the Tony's suggestion "The “123” layout now includes mathematical symbols, in addition to digits" and the final version is "In addition to digits, we have included mathematical symbols into the “123” layout""

Besides means "also" or "in addition to", not "alternatively".

I think "in addition to" works well here.

beside the digits, mathematical symbols etc

Sorry to break the ranks but isn't this a clich'e? Let a native speaker be a judge. Google, at any rate, is on my side
Peer comment(s):

agree Nick Nott : 'As well as the digits' is the most fluent. 'In addition to the digits' is second best. 'Besides of the digits' and 'Beside the digits' are both incorrect.

neutral R. Alex Jenkins : 'beside the digits' is not right. It sounds like 'next to the digits'.

neutral anastasia t (X) : agree with richard jenkins
8 hrs
disagree Tony M : No, as RJ and AT have pointed out, that then becomes "alongside, next to..." If the word "beside..." is to be used at all, it HAS to be "besides"
8 hrs
disagree Richard Benham : With previous commentators. However, all suggestions to date imply that the digits have ALSO been added, which is hardly likely to be the intention....

Sorry to offer yet another suggestion to the growing plethora (esp. with the large agreement with Tony, which I also think is a possibility), but I thought that this alternative should also be given an airing.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Yes Bill, but surely this emphasizes the "also added at the same time", which both RB and I feel is the wrong interpretation?
