English term

head first

English Tech/Engineering Computers: Hardware scanner
business card scanner

the instructions say:
"Insert a business card face down; head first in the scanner"

...as I don't have a picture I wonder if you have to insert it in a slot (in this case the top of the card will be inserted first) or placed on a flat surface, in which case the top of the card would go against the scanner base line, correct?

slot

It sounds like a slot: "head first".

Here are some pictures of business card scanners, the only difference is, that these are face up. The one on the right is "head first".

To insert the card the proper way ensures the data to be read, organised and stored automatically.

place the card on the scanner with the face (front) against the surface (so you can't see the text)

and the top of the card should be at the top of the scanner.

I don\'t see it as a slot but like an office scanner though smaller
