art and film

I would say they study painting, sculpture, etc. and film/video. They might study the actual practice or painting and film production or the history of these activities.

The Moving Image Arts Department offers a comprehensive program that integrates film, video and digital production with critical studies and writing.

agree JaneTranslates : Yes. Since video and digital formats don't use film and since "moving pictures" and "motion pictures" refer to the movie industry, a new phrase had to be coined, apparently: "moving image."
