English term

Mapping or Cartography?

English Other Environment & Ecology
I'm translating names of modules for a Geology degree. I'm unsure which term is best to use. Mapping or Cartography (or something else)?

Mapping/Cartography and Photointerpretation

mapping would be fine

Geological mapping, etc is fine (and for the others).

\"(P)Geological Mapping in the Llandeilo area
David Green BA FGS
The weekend course will focus on the geology of a small area of igneous and fossiliferous sedimentary rocks, exposed in a variety of natural and man-made outcrops on an upland sheep and cattle farm. The task will be to map the position and the structure of the various rock units on a base map, and from this data interpret the geology of the unexposed parts of the area, and its geological structure and history.
A weekend field course from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday 2 and 3 October 2004.
4 Credits at level 0
Fee £40.00\"

Mapping and Cartography are both names for mapmaking.
Mapping can also be other types of plotting out which aren\'t mapmaking(don\'t forget that a lot of map making is a matter of plotting survey results).
The ambiguity doesn\'t matter - I believe mapping fits them all, is used for them all (at least sometimes, if not more) and will be understood and thought natural by Geology diploma readers.

Cartography is making a map. Mapping has other meanings.

All 3 dictionaries [Oxford, Cambridge & Webster] give only one meaning for Cartography i.e. The art or science of making a map. For mapping, there are other meanings also. Depending on the course content, you may choose.

agree George Rabel : Agree. "Mapping" is about the same as "plotting", and several other meanings. Cartography is just the art / science of making maps
