English term

feathering off

English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters feathering off
You basically don't get too much of a chance to enjoy the scenery, cause you're just feathering off everything, reading the weather, and the scenery. When do you get a chance to relax, then?

Someone talking to a pilot of small charter flight.

Thanks in advance,

Discussion

Daryo Mar 23, 2021:
Yes, that kind of "feathering" does have s.t. to do with aviation, although it would be relevant ONLY for airplanes propulsed by "variable pitch propellers" (more likely to be big heavy airplanes, BTW), but it's still NOT what "feathering off everything" would be about in this text.
airmailrpl Mar 22, 2021:
from the asker's context "talking to a pilot of small charter flight"
Daryo Mar 22, 2021:
This text is not about that kind of "feathering".
Makes no sense for several reasons, one being that not all airplanes have propellers, and not all propellers have a system of variable angle of attack for propeller blades.
And even when there is such system of varibale blade angle, that's far from being the one and only parameter to keep an eye on.
Or simple text analysis: the term is "feathering OFF"
airmailrpl Mar 22, 2021:
Feather b(1) : to change the angle of (airplane propeller blades) so that the chords become approximately parallel to the line of flight also : to change the angle of airplane propeller blades of (an engine) in such a manner. (2) : to change the angle of (a rotor blade of a rotorcraft) periodically in forward flight.

taking a quick look at

I would say
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Not familiar with the term, but I'd agree that logically this is what it must mean here: so much to watch out for, too busy to really enjoy the view!

agree Yvonne Gallagher : I presume feathering means flying so probably just busy flying...

neutral Daryo : that's the general idea, but can be more precise.

rushing through

Possible suggestion.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I've never seen this phrase, but this would be my guess: looking at a lot of things quickly.

Thanks, Phil!
neutral Tony M : I think 'rushing through' implies too much of a notion of deliberately hurrying, rather than as I believe it means here, simply to have a lot of things to pay attention to at the same time.

Yeah, I suppose looking at it from that angle it makes more sense. Thanks for the input, Tony!
disagree Daryo : "rushing through" anything while flying doesn't sound like a good idea - more like a recipe for disaster waiting to happen

Taking a gander at

To take a gander at is a flexible idiom that relies on context to understand if the time spent amounts to a quick perusal or a longer, more thoughtful look.

As with feathering off, it depends how much dust there is.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Not only is this higly informal, colloquial register quite out of place in this document, it also does have more of a connotation of examining something, which changes the slant of the sense required here.

agree philgoddard : I don't think this merits a disagree, since we're basically making educated guesses.

disagree Daryo : the ST is about piloting - how about looking at sources about piloting? Possibly more relevant than some general-purpose-context-free dictionary?

English term (edited): feathering off everything

scanning all the instruments

six basic instruments to keep an eye on at all times

http://krepelka.com/fsweb/lessons/instrument/images/lesson15...

Monitor Scanning
After the final trim adjustments are made, the six main panel instruments (Figure 1) are monitor-scanned. This is often done in a clockwise fashion, going from the top row to the bottom row of instruments. Actually, you can select any particular pattern of eye movement that is comfortable to you. The objective is to monitor deviations from the established attitude. If you notice a deviation, make a small adjustment on the attitude indicator to maintain the desired flight conditions.

Peer comment(s):

agree David Sirett : But the feathering off might specifically be the small adjustments made in response to the instrument readings
