port pivot

English Social Sciences Government / Politics
i barely have a clue or can provide context! it's just that a blogger (American and most likely Democrat), with the pseudonym AlphaLiberal, wrote an entry entitle "Time for Port Pivot" at a time before May 2006. i'm afraid the entry was deleted, and i just cannot identify what it was about to translate the title. is it related to the harbors? and what would a pivot be in reference to that?

and thanks alot, Jack Doughty, for racking your brains!
Mahammad Kalfat (X) (asker) May 24, 2006:
thanks thanks alot Longo Pros, the link you've provided didn't even return in my seach results. i'm now reassured about the exact meaning of a "port pivot" (an overall focus on the issue of ports).
Lingo Pros May 24, 2006:
Have you checked the link I provided? The first two para there show pretty much what the blogger is asking for...
Mahammad Kalfat (X) (asker) May 24, 2006:
so, in reference to the port security issue, the title now means that it's time for the Democrats to turn to the ports issue, right?
Mahammad Kalfat (X) (asker) May 24, 2006:
port security though Doughty's approach is pretty smart and sophistcated, Lingo Pros's is much more realistic. actually, i suspected a link between the entry title and the UAE's controversial proposal of managing some American ports, especially when i came on a cache of another entry under the same username on this issue, urging the Democrats to "pivot to Bush's failures and other themes".

A blog entry about US port security

"Time for a port pivot" was a blog entry by AlphaLiberal on Feb 27, 2006 about US port security issues asking the democrats to do a "pivot" on the issue:

The Democrats have done a pretty good job of raising the port security issue. (However, they do need to raise the stronger reasons, raised online, regarding the specific concerns with UAE ownership of some of our port operations. This to undercut charges based on open trade and anti-Arabism).

My main point here is that national Democrats would be smart to do a pivot on the issue. We need to raise the broader issue of port security, for all port operators, while continuing to press on the UAE/Dubai Ports World (DPW) issue.

Democrats need to unveil a plan to increase America’s security by increasing port and airport security. Here is why they should do so now:

- It will get press now. They will demonstrate solid Democratic plans and alternatives at a time it will garner attention.

- This new PR effort will show that Democrats have been working on port security for a long time.

- This new PR effort will show that Republicans have bungled the port security problem, leaving American less secure.

- We can declare victory on the Dubai Ports World issue, and keep attention on that, while breathing continued life into the issue while the 45-day review and oversight hearings go forward.

- This will blunt the argument that Democrats don't have plans from a position of strength.

There are many other reasons to do this, but I'm a working stiff and need to run. Comments welcome!

A turn to the left?

With so little context, it's difficult to say, but "port" may be used here in the maritime sense in which port = left and starboard = right. To pivot does mean to turn, but it's a strange choice of words. And if port means left, "left" is to be taken in the political sense of the advocacy of state control, active wealth redistribution and other measures to promote equality, and so on, as opposed to right, meaning a more laissez-faire policy, believing that the economy and social life will do better if left to themselves.

agree jccantrell : would be my guess, too. Democrats here in the USA are seen as left-leaning so he is calling for a change in direction for the government.
