it's a reference to acrobats at the circus

who can walk a tightrope without falling - requires balancing.

A balancing act in modern life means to be able to strike the perfect equilibrium between, say, work and family, home and the office, without falling due to an unbalance, ie too much effort/time/concentration in one particular area of one's life.

hard to explain without context, but...

balancing act is, to use more jargon, walking the line between alternatives

it's to offset one thing against another, trying not to unduly favor either side

it's finding the right path to take so that you don't put too much stress on one factor or another.

agree RHELLER : yes, I don't know why colleagues are focusing on two - there are MANY things to balance when one is a corporate manager, for example (may be 8-10)

knowing how to make a compromise between two ostensibly exclusive situations

How to reconcile two (or more) things that are, at least on the face of it, mutually exclusive...

As others have said work/home, earnings/time to enjoy them, mother/wife, etc.

Knowing how to balance things that are fundamentally trying to unbalance you.

Walking a tight-rope between 2 situations...
